Top 10 Proofreading Tips

I got this from Grant MacEwan University back in 2007.  These are some resume tips that I would like to share.

  1. Print out the resume.

  1. Read it slowly, one word at a time. Focus on:

    1. Dates of Employment
    2. Phone numbers and e-mail addresses
    3. Spelling of proper nouns
    4. Headings
    5. Consistency of formatting

  1. Mark any changes on the proof with a pen (green/red).

  1. Read it backwards, one word at a time.

  1. Make the changes to the document on your computer.

  1. Print it again.

  1. Read it again.

  1. Compare the proof version with pen marks to the new proof. Check off that each correction was made.

  1. Let it sit overnight.

  1. Ask two other capable proofreaders to read it with a critical eye.
