workaholic/ coffee facts/ delusions of grandeur

Feb. 24 Workaholic: Carol Brown sent me this article "12 Reasons Being Workaholic isn't a Virtue."

1. There's more to life than work.
2. Being a workaholic can be very stressful.
3. Achievement isn't everything.
4. A mind that never gets a break may not be at it's best.
5. If you live to work, you're missing out on the best parts of life.
6. Working can be an addiction.
7. Working too much can take away benefits so much work brings.

8. Work shouldn't be a prison sentence.
9. Burning out won't help the bottom line.
10. Work is about quality, not quantity.
11. You're not participating in your own life.
12. Excess is rarely a good thing.

I was just going through my blog and I found that I have already wrote about this.  However, I didn't file it in my email that I read it.  I think I needed to read that article again to remind myself to have fun.

Dress for Success: Jacquie Barrie sent me this article "How to Dress for Success."  It mentions how not to wear too much cologne and perfume because of people's allergies.

Men: Don't wear novelty ties.

Women: Don't put on too much makeup because it can be distracting.

To men and women: Dress conservatively and go with the saying: "Dress for the job they want, not the job they have."

Placement agencies: Carol Watson sent me this article "Top 5 Tips for Parents Working with a Placement Agency."  I thought the info could apply to me, but it's really for parents using a placement agency to find a nanny for them.  However, I have applied to a company before, and then I was directed to do a job interview at this staffing agency.

But reading this article did make me think about how companies make a hiring decision.  It gave me a different point of view.

1. Choose your agency carefully.
2. Know exactly what you're looking for before you start interviewing nannies.
3. Listen to the advice of your placement coordinator.
4. Follow your instincts.
5. Stay in touch with your agency after placement.

Work at home jobs: Hannah Howard sent me this article called "10 Work at Home jobs that aren't a scam."  These are legit, however some are hard to get.  #6 is a travel agent.  I have met a woman last year who has created her own travel agency business.

1. Medical transcription.
2. Search engine evaluator.
3. Freelance graphic artist.
4. Writing and editing.
5. Teacher.
6. Travel agent.
7. Tech support specialist.
8. Call Centre customer support.
9. Web designer or developer.
10. Translator.

One of my friends heard about how Telus has a customer service rep job, and you can actually do it from home.

Internet scams:
Hannah Howard sent me this article "15 Common Internet Scams and How to Avoid Them."

1. The Nigerian scam.
2. Lottery.
3. Convincing fakes of official entities.
4. Item for sale.
5. Employment.
6. Disaster relief.
7. Travel.
8. Get-rich-quick.
9. Sweetheart.
10. Prime bank note.

11. Letter of credit.
12. Goods not as listed.
13. Rogue Anti-virus software.
14. Survey.
15. Something for nothing.

It's a good article and it reminds me of watching 20/20 and news magazine shows.  They often cover stories about scams.

Extreme Cheapskates: Elisabeth Wright sent me this article called "Crazy Ways Extreme Cheapskates Save Money."  Some things weren't that crazy like use old appliances, and don't ever upgrade them.  Also write down all your expenses and keep everything unplugged.  If it's plugged in, it does take electricity.

1. Pee in a bottle.
2. Put your freezer on a timer.
3. Shower somewhere else.
4. Dumpster dive for food.
5. Cook on a makeshift stove.
6. Eat wild edibles.
7. Use old appliances.
8. Keep everything unplugged.
9. Track everything.
10. Remember the best price is always free.

I do have a problem with this one:
2. "Put your freezer on a timer. Set your freezer on a timer to cycle on and off every 12 hours and cut the cost of running your freezer in half. Just be sure to pray that the meat stays frozen."

I don't have a problem with #4 "Dumpster dive for food."  Lots of grocery stores and restaurants throw out food and there are "freegans" (people who aren't homeless who dumpster dive for food.)

Coffee facts: Hannah Howard sent me this article "10 Things You Should Know about Coffee before you drink your next cup."  I have to read it because I drink coffee.  It wakes me up and makes me stay up to get work done.

I make instant coffee and drink one when I wake up in the morning, and have to have one when I'm work.  I get free coffee at my restaurant.  Here are some things I learned:

"Hawaii is the only state in the U.S. that grows coffee, known as Kona coffee, while Brazil produces 30% of the world’s coffee."

"Black coffee has no calories. That’s right! No calories! The way calories add up is what you put in with your coffee."

"Coffee is the second largest world commodity. The first is oil. It is also the second most popular drink in the world after water."

Delusions of grandeur: I was watching this Tyra Banks show, and they had a psychologist on.  He mentions the phrase "delusions of grandeur."  You think you are so good at something, but you aren't.  It's like watching those talent shows on TV like American Idol and So You Think You Can Dance.  There are some people who are so delusional about their talent, that they go for it.

I did find this quote: "A man must have a certain amount of intelligent ignorance to get anywhere."-Charles F. Kettering

I'll add that to my collection of quotes.  It's the saying: "You never know until you try."  Or at least get experts to review your talent.  It's like being an artist.  You show your paintings to your friends, but they say they don't really like it.  You should take pictures of your paintings and go to those art galleries on 124 street.  Show the paintings to the art gallery owners because they're experts.

If they don't buy it, fine.  Go on the internet and put up your paintings by creating your own website.
