self-education/ print maker/ career counselor

Oct. 1 Self-education: Jasmine Hall sent me this article "How to Sell your Self-Education to Employers."  At the top was a little infographic about how you have to have more self-discipline because there is no strict curriculum and teacher there.

Sometimes you have to take a course online like the Canadian Securities Course (CSC) to work at a bank.  After you study it, you have to take register to take a test, pass it, and then apply for jobs with it.

In the article, it mentions you have to show credibility in your online course.  Put it on your Linked In profile.  Don't put it in "Education", but "Add sections to reflect achievements and experiences.”  Another tip was to show them your class portfolio to show what you did and what you learned.

Oct. 2 Art historian: This is from my Multiple Choices career workbook I got from my career counseling office.  In the entertainment industry, it mentioned being a art historian.  That sounds interesting so I Google it and on Ask.com, it says you have to have a degree in history.

This site is more informative.  A degree in art history can lead to working as a museum curator.

http://www.collegesurfing.com/content/become-art-museum-curator/

This mentions Kate Middleton who majored in art history.  You can work at art galleries, auction houses and teach.  I would like to work at an art gallery.  I did apply and did an interview for one as an administrative assistant.  I like to admire art.  Maybe sell art instead of be a art historian.

Art gallery: If I work at an art gallery, than I could be creative and practical at the same time.  I have taken 3 classes from the Arts and Management at MacEwan.

Print maker: Another job was a print maker.  They make printed images from all sorts of materials like metal, glass, and plastic.  They create etchings, screen prints by "pressing an inked surface onto material by hand and others use computer software to create digital images that will be printing on paper."

It's like being an artist, but being it's practical.  Kind of like being a graphic artist.  I took graphic design at NAIT.

Here's some education info about it.

Career counselor:
Maybe I could become a career counselor.  I'm really interested in jobs and education.  I just emailed my Career Counselor to ask what college programs she took to get her career.  I was on ehow and that's the first thing it told me to do.

It says you may need a masters for this.

http://www.ehow.com/how_14285_become-career-guidance.html

According to this other site, it said the same thing as ehow:  masters degree and "Many master degree programs also require supervised clinical counseling experience."

The duties: "They look at and assess the individual’s education, skills, interests, personality traits, work history, and training."

http://www.degreefinders.com/education-articles/careers/how-to-become-a-career-counselor.html

This site says master's degree in counseling, education, or psychology would help.  I don't really want to go to more school.

Guidance counselor: I thought this would be easier to get than a career counselor, but it also says you have to have a masters.  I don't know, I was hoping it would be like the dental industry.  Ex. if you want to be a dentist, you go to school for years.  If you want to be a dental assistant, you can go to NAIT for 2 yrs.

This is the US:
http://education-portal.com/how_to_become_a_high_school_guidance_counselor.html

This is Canada.  It mentions to become a teacher, and pass this test: "Part I, Part II and specialist, of the Guidance and Career Education qualifications (see reference 3 for course guidelines from the Ontario College of Teachers"

Oct. 3: My Career Counselor emailed me back saying she has a certificate in Career Development from Concordia.  She says she's more of a career advisor and to look at "Career Development Professional" profile on alis.alberta.ca/occinfo.  I did, and it says you need a bachelor's degree.

Job analyst: On About.com, it says: "collect and examine detailed information about job duties to prepare job descriptions. These descriptions explain the duties, training, and skills each job requires. Whenever a large organization introduces a new job or reviews existing jobs, it calls upon the expert knowledge of the job analyst."

I like to collect information, and write about it.

http://humanresources.about.com/od/jobdescriptions/f/hr_analysis.htm

The education says college education in human resources and labor relations. compensation, etc.

Research assistant: On Wikipedia, it says it's often temporary contract.  It's often at a university or research institute.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Research_assistant

Oh ehow, it says most of them are graduate students.

http://www.ehow.com/about_5554003_research-assistant-do.html

On Wise Geek, it says they can work at nonprofit agencies, and for-profit corporations.

Accountants: I'm not good or like math, but I heard on the radio this website called Limitless Possibilities.  That sounded interesting. I checked it out and it's for Certified General Accountants.

Oct. 4 Flashback: I had kept a folder with job interview questions back when I was at NAIT in 2004.  I had also kept job info I got from Call Centre #1.  I had gotten laid off in 2006 and the call centre held these information sessions and job fair to help you get a job.  I attended the session and kept the papers.  I read them last night.

It made me realize I had a lot to learn about jobs and careers.  When I was 19-21 yrs old, I thought it was about know the right things to say and do at an interview.  Now I'm 27, with a lot of job interview experience and reading books and articles, it's also about the strongest answer you give.  You may not be the best applicant, but you are the best interviewee.

Saying: I found this saying as I was researching the communications strategist job.

"The guest is a better judge of the meal than the cook." -Aristotle

Question: If you have any job advice to give me, please do.  I'm sure all of you have at one point or another.  Some tells me to go to this site, a couple looked at my resume and gave me tips, some sent me links to a job ad.  I thank you guys, and I appreciate it.
