public relations/ productivity and unemployment/ scam detector

Aug. 27 Public relations: I was on the bus and I saw an ad for the Public Relations program at Grant MacEwan.  Earlier I was researching about being a public relations consultant.  The admissions is you have to have at least 30 post- secondary credits and a college English course.  I have done that.

All program courses are at the City Centre campus on weekday nights.

The industries you can get into are:  "corporate communication departments, government, private industry, professional organizations, media, not-for-profit and community organizations."

The careers are: "Public affairs officer, communications specialist, community relations, special event coordinator, editorial assistant, media spokesperson, promotions coordinator."

I read more in- depth of the classes and it's mostly communications and writing.  There is a relation to my college diploma in Professional Writing.

I looked it up at NAIT's website, and got Business Administration, two of them marketing.

Aug. 28 Phone book: Here's my other new direction.  Look for a job through the phone book.  Well back when I was unemployed in 2010, this janitor Chase who worked at the mall I worked in told me this tip.  I did a little bit, but now I will do it again.

Telemarketing: I checked out the telemarketing companies.  One didn't have an Edmonton location.  One was in Sherwood Park and that's too far away.  One company I know about, but the hours and distance aren't good.  The other one is on vacation.  Another one isn't hiring.

Nanny: I always get these article submitted to me through my blog about being a nanny.  Then I thought: "What if I became a nanny?"  I don't want to change diapers, so I'll take care of kids 4yrs and older.  I want a job that I can do.  I probably have to take First Aid.

Ehow: It said to baby-sit in high school.  It talked about some home economics like cooking.  It mentioned schools on how to be a nanny.

I looked up nanny schools in Canada and got this:

TV shows and movies: Then I looked up The Nanny TV show.  It was from 1993-1999.  I never really watched it.

I'm thinking of Mary Poppins and The Simpsons parody Sherry Bobbins.  Throw in Mrs. Doubtfire and Arrested Development's parody of that movie called Mrs. Featherbottom.

The question is this: "Do you like kids?"  I never want to have kids of my own because it's too much responsibility.  Homer Simpson said: "That's the thing with being a dad.  Long hours and no pay."  As for being a nanny, I get paid.  I never changed a diaper.  I never baby-sat for other people's kids.

Books: I read a lot of The Baby-Sitter's Club books as a kid and teenager.  I read it for the fun things the characters did like solve a mystery, traveling, their contemporary problems with school, friends, and relationships.

Experience: I work at a restaurant and lots of families with kids come in.  I spent a couple of hrs with my 4 yr old cousin back in 2010.  She gave me a tour of her house.

I was a teacher's assistant for two yrs and had to supervise groups of children from 5-7yr olds.  There were about 20 kids I had to watch at a time.  I may not have baby-sat other people's kids, but this is relevant experience.

Flashback: I got a flashback of 2005 when I got hired at Call Centre #1.  I met this punk-rock 16 yr old guy James there.

James: I was helping my friend baby-sit yesterday, and since the kid was walking so slow, I had to carry him.  We almost missed the LRT because of him.
Me: Yeah, well how old is he?
James: Uh, I don't know.  Like 2?
Me (laughs): Well of course he can't walk that fast!  His legs are too short.

Kijiji: I went there to see what childcare positions are available.  There are a lot of baby-sitting, daycare, and also care of kids with special needs.  It's also about the patience to take care of kids.

Call back: The other day I did a little phone interview with this woman from a medical office.  I decided to call her today to possibly schedule an interview.  She went with someone else and will keep my resume.

Aug. 29 Quest Research: Yesterday I got a phone call from this research company called Quest Research.  They asked if I could do a survey.  I said yes, but they asked if I had worked in market research before and said yes I did.  They couldn't interview me due to my bias.

I looked it up so I could see if I could apply there.  It was really far away and I had to take 2 buses and an LRT.

Aug. 30 Productivity and unemployment: Carol Brown sent me this article "8 Ways your Productivity Affects Unemployment Rate."  I like this article because it talks about cause and effect and unintended consequences.

#3 talks about how technology can help you be more productive, but it can also take away jobs.  A long time ago I wrote about my dad saying there used to be a person who was a phone operator, and now replaced by a robotic voice.

#5 talks about shipping jobs overseas, and it increase productivity for the company.  However, there's unemployment in the country where the jobs were supposed to be before it moved to another country.

#8 says: "America is producing more goods now than it did before the economic slump began in 2007, even with 6 million fewer workers. Yet the share in the profits from these gains in productivity is smaller than ever for workers with real wages dropping 28% since 1969, its lowest point since the government began keeping track in 1947."

#8 also talks about if one job isn't paying enough, you get a 2nd one.  That means less jobs to go around.

Sept. 1 Job interview: I went to a job interview to be a receptionist/ sales associate.  I have been to an interview like this one before.  They were looking for full-time and 9hr shifts.  I'm assuming it's 30min breaks, maybe 1hr break.  It's a really big company with lots of locations.

The hours are fine.  He didn't tell me what the pay was.  It was up to the manager and other people to look at your resume and see how much you would qualify for.  The interview was fine.  It was a few min. long and he asked about my experience.  I told him I have done retail (that's relevant selling) and working at restaurants (customer service.)

They had put an ad up months ago, and I applied there, and they called.  I missed their call and left a message and they didn't call back.

Sept. 2 Scam detector: A couple of months back, I thought I could be a scam detector.  I am reminded because yesterday I got this text message that says I won a free iPad.  I typed in the phone number and it lead me here:

I was going through my other text messages and I had gotten a text message that won something else.  I typed in that phone number and it lead me to this site where you can complain:

http://www.callercenter.com/229-848-4056.html

I then looked up Better Business Bureau and I can work for them.  It actually lead to the website called scam-detector.com.  I watch a lot of news magazine shows like 20/20 and W-Five where investigative reporters investigate scams and the victims.  The victims and TV shows want justice and to inform others about it.

Sept. 4 Lateral move: The server who recently quit after working here for a couple years, got another job at a restaurant.  She's making a lot of money there.  I thought it was like a lateral move, you're just moving sideways.  As long as she likes it and makes money, that's what matters.

I did talk to another server who recently started working here.  She was at another restaurant and she said her boss was really mean, so that's why she quit.
