Breaking news in the Nigerian kidnapping case

Tracy -

This morning Amnesty announced shocking new information. Nigerian military forces had been alerted to the planned kidnapping of more than 300 girls – and did absolutely nothing to prevent it.

Now those girls have been abducted and are at risk of being sold into sexual slavery merely because they had the courage to seek an education.

Boko Haram, the Islamist armed group claiming responsibility for the kidnappings, abducted the girls and is threatening to sell them into sexual slavery or forced “marriage.”

Amnesty is mounting a global campaign calling for the girls’ unconditional, immediate release and pressuring the Nigerian government to take responsibility for its inaction.

Time is of the essence. Boko Haram has terrorized local communities with the aim of destabilizing the government and establishing its own rule. Amnesty experts estimate that the conflict between Boko Haram and Nigerian forces in northeastern Nigeria has resulted in the deaths of more than 1,500 people in the first three months of 2014 alone.

Please donate to support our efforts.

While Amnesty continues to campaign for the release of the girls, we are also advocating for an end to violence against women and girls – which is often wielded as a weapon of war – and other human rights abuses that continue to be committed in Nigeria.

Thank you for your support.
