Jailed lawyer's defence of women a threat to Iran's national security

I got this from Amnesty International:

How does standing up for the rights of women and children become an "act against national security"?
The answer is plainly that Nasrin Sotoudeh's work to defend the rights of women is considered a threat to the government of Iran.

Thank you so much for responding to our urgent appeal to Iranian authorities. It is the willingness of people like you to speak out that gives hope for Nasrin during her detainment, and gives promise for real human rights change to all of the people Nasrin is able to defend as a human rights lawyer. Thank you!

Please help Nasrin to once again be a powerful advocate for women's rights by donating to our efforts to secure Nasrin's release.

Simply because she has defended the rights of women and children, Nasrin has endured appalling prison conditions, a ban from practicing law, and separation from her family. Nasrin has spent lengthy periods of time in solitary confinement in Tehran's notorious Evin Prison.

Amnesty International considers the imprisonment of Nasrin Sotoudeh and other defence lawyers to be part of an orchestrated attempt by the Iranian authorities to repress dissent in the country.

The Iranian authorities have been targeting human rights lawyers as a means of preventing Iranians from being able to access appropriate, competent legal representation, a basic human right and an important guarantee for a fair trial.

Nasrin Sotoudeh and her work is a threat, and women and children in Iran need her to be a threat.

Please make a donation to Amnesty International and help us exert massive public and international pressure to free Nasrin and strengthen her work to promote the rights of women in Iran and around the world.

In 2011, while in prison, Nasrin was awarded the prestigious Pen International Freedom to Write award in New York and the presenter described her this way:

“as a writer, as an activist, and as a lawyer she has dedicated herself to a simple and powerful idea: the principle that the rights guaranteed by law are absolute and shared equally by all...In honouring her with this award, we stand with the millions of Iranians she has stood up for and inspired, and we urge individuals and governments around the world to join us in pressing for her immediate release.”

This is not a woman who should be behind bars!

She is a courageous advocate of human rights, an articulate, passionate force whose freedom will bring stronger human rights protection for women. Her freedom will make the world a better place. Please contribute to our work to secure her release.
Sincerely,

P.S.  You may know that a Canadian is also wrongfully in prison in Iran and is very much on our minds and at the centre of our human rights work. If you have not yet taken action, please visit our online petition on Hamid Ghassemi-Shall and join more than 10,000 Canadians who are urging his safe return home. We can't accomplish the vital work without the financial support of people like you. Thank you in advance for responding to this message and sharing it with people who share your concern for human rights.
