A window of hope? Help close Guantanamo

I got this from Amnesty International:

Dear Tracy,

Imagine being locked up without due process for 11 years, thousands of miles from home. Your government has repeatedly intervened to bring you back and reunite you with your family. But you're still held, beaten and deprived of sleep.

This is reality for UK citizen Shaker Aamer. And after 11 years, this week, he may be seeing a small window of hope.

In response to the mass hunger strike of over 100 detainees at Guantanamo Bay, President Obama renewed his pledge to close the prison last week -- but some in Congress want to keep it open.

Will you help us keep pressure on President Obama? Make an urgent monthly donation to Amnesty so we can continue to speak out for people unlawfully detained in Guantanamo Bay and around the world.

Four years and three months ago President Obama promised to shut Guantanamo down for good. He has barely said a word about his broken promise since.

We must leverage this high-profile moment to keep the pressure on President Obama and ensure that he:
  • Appoints a high-level official to focus on closing the facility.
  • Investigates the hunger strike and makes sure no detainees are being abused.
  • Ensures that each detainee is either charged and fairly tried in federal court, or released to countries that will respect their human rights.
Amnesty is mobilizing our team of policy experts and our grassroots community to keep non-stop pressure on the administration and Congress.

Let's show President Obama that it's time to do more than talk. Make a monthly donation and help support this urgent work.

Lives are at stake. And you can help. Will you?

Sincerely,

Zeke Johnson
