We did it! 20 years in the making!

I got this from Amnesty International

We did it! You did it.
The world now has an Arms Trade Treaty!

Make a contribution to support
Amnesty International's life-saving human rights work
The world said a resounding "YES" to an incredible, historic agreement yesterday to regulate the $100 billion arms trade!

Thank you for the important role you played in helping us reach this historic moment.

This landmark United Nations agreement will help prevent the transfer of guns, bombs, tanks and bullets to countries where we know or suspect they would be used to commit abuses.

It was 20 years of relentless campaigning that helped lead to yesterday's decision. The treaty puts muscle behind the right of women in the Ivory Coast not to be raped at gunpoint, the right of families in Syria not to be blown up in their homes, and it will help keep weapons out of the hands of child soldiers.

This treaty has the power to save lives, and it was all accomplished thanks to you.

Financial contributions from supporters like you allowed Amnesty International to have a team of campaigners present at the Arms Trade Treaty negotiations in New York, ensuring the combined voice of millions of Amnesty supporters around the world was heard.  And the support you showed by signing our petition was part of a massive, global effort that helped push governments to do the right thing. In the end, only North Korea, Iran and Syria voted against the treaty.

Your financial support today can help us ensure that the important next steps take place: that the treaty comes into force and is properly monitored so that guns stay out of the hands of child soldiers, so that civilian lives are spared from the haunting effect of  indiscriminate aerial bombing.

Help us make you proud by bringing more life-saving results like the Arms Trade Treaty. Give today.

Just how important is this arms treaty?

It won't stop war, but it can and will prevent deadly human rights violations from occurring. "We really need to control the flow of arms. In Africa, we don't even know where the arms come from. We really need to prevent countries where there’s real potential of sexual violence from accessing small arms. You don’t need a hundred guns to abuse women’s rights. One man with a gun can rape a whole village.”
-Marren Akatsa-Bukachs, who works with survivors of violence in Africa.

From today onwards, because of the Arms Trade Treaty, and because of human rights supporters like you, the world is a step closer to being a safer, fairer place.
Thank you – you helped us accomplish something special.

Sincerely,
