Arms Trade Treaty Victory: What’s next?

I got this from Amnesty International:

Dear Tracy,

You supported Amnesty's campaign to ensure the adoption of a strong Arms Trade Treaty. And today your efforts paid off.

After weeks of intense negotiations at the UN conference, including a bitter roadblock put up by Iran, Syria and North Korea, a final treaty was adopted! The treaty prohibits arms transfers that would be used for genocide, crimes against humanity or war crimes. We are now closer than ever to the golden rule we've been advocating for: governments must prevent arms transfers where there is a substantial risk that they will be used to commit or facilitate serious violations of human rights.

Our campaign for an Arms Trade Treaty is 20 years in the making. While today was a big win, there is still a lot of work to do. The treaty is adopted but "asleep" -- it needs to be ratified by 50 countries before it will enter into force. Amnesty International USA will demand that the Obama Administration and the U.S. Congress take an important stand for human rights by ratifying this landmark treaty.

As you can imagine, powerful special interests like the NRA lobby are already mobilizing to undermine our efforts to ratify the Arms Trade Treaty in the United States.

Will you help us in our sprint to the finish line? Become a monthly donor.

Your monthly contribution will help support our large-scale Arms Trade Treaty mobilization campaign to urge President Obama to sign, and the Senate to ratify, this historic treaty and fight human rights abuses worldwide.

Plus, giving monthly is the easiest and most convenient way to be a human rights champion every single day.

We hope you'll join us. And thank you for all that you do.

Sincerely,

Michelle Ringuette
Chief of Campaigns and Programs
Amnesty International USA
