Overview


Hospital unit clerks play a vital role in managing communication and information in hospital nursing units, and are the first point of contact for patients. Learn medical terminology, how to process medical orders, communication skills, administrative procedures, and computer skills. Offered in fast-paced in-person or online, you can obtain your certificate in just four months, including a one-month practicum in a medical setting.

Student Success

Students are more likely to be successful in this program if they:
  • are physically and emotionally able to manage workplace demands
  • have access to transportation to complete their practicum
  • have access to a computer, internet connection and basic keyboarding/computer skills
  • are able to work shift work
  • are able to dedicate 10-20 additional hours per week over and above regular course hours (in-person students)
  • are able to dedicate 40-50 hours per week for their coursework (online students)
  • work well in a team environment
  • are able to work 150 hours, four weeks of full-time work to complete the practicum including day, evening, or night shifts on any day of the week, including weekends and holidays
  • can type 45 words per minute before the program starts

Practicum/Work Experience

This program includes a one-month practicum. For all delivery methods, practicum may be arranged in or close to the student's community. The student's practicum schedule will follow their preceptor's schedule and may include day, evening, or night shifts any day of the week, including weekends and holidays. Students are required to work full-time during the practicum.

My opinion: This seems very hard.  It's fast-paced like 4 months.  I'm not that interested in it.

The Office Assistant program of study consists solely of core courses; students do not take electives or options. The core courses must be completed in the order presented on the tabbed pages; that is, term one courses are taken only in the first term, and so on.



Term I


     ENGL 102 - Analysis and Argument

This course helps students to develop the academic writing skills they use throughout their university studies. The essay is the most important genre in this course, but students may also study works from other genres. By analyzing, summarizing, synthesizing, and critiquing a variety of texts, students learn how to develop their own analyses and arguments with appropriate and correctly documented primary and secondary sources. A thorough review of grammar and sentence structure is a key component of this course. Note: Students should not register in more than one first-year English course per term.

     WRIT 101 - First Year Writing

This course introduces students to the genres of writing required in university and beyond. Through a series of writing assignments, the course will help students develop a theory of writing that they can use in a variety of contexts. Students will write in several genres and learn strategies for effective research and revision. Note: Students cannot receive credit for both WRIT 101 and ENGL 102.

     OAMS 110 - Medical Office Procedures I
Hours:60:0:0 Credits:3
Students explore the changing role of the Medical Office Assistant with an emphasis on communication, telephone techniques, and medical office procedures. Students discuss ethical and professional standards as well as relevant Acts and Legislations. In addition, students study the concept of cultural diversity and practices within a medical environment.

     OAMS 111 - Office Technology and Skill Development I
Hours:60:0:0 Credits:3
Students create and manage electronic files and work with email and Windows. Student attain an intermediate level of competency in word processing and develop skills in formatting documents using current software. In addition, students achieve a minimum typing speed of 35 net words per minute on a five minute timing, using a five error cut off.

     OAMS 113 - Medical Terminology I
Hours:45:0:0 Credits:3
Students analyze the language and terms used to refer to body systems and the related pathology and medical procedures. Emphasis is placed on spelling and understanding terminology through word building. Students apply knowledge of medical terminology to read and understand medical documentation.

     OAMS 114 - Pharmaceutical Terminology
Hours:45:0:0 Credits:3
This course is an introduction to basic pharmaceutical terminology. Students focus on the pharmaceutical terminology related to their administrative duties as medical office assistants and unit clerks.

     OAMS 128 - Office Math Applications and Basic Bookkeeping
Hours:30:0:0 Credits:2
Students apply basic mathematical concepts in business and personal applications. Topics include compiling petty cash expenses, preparing a petty cash envelope, calculating expense claims, completing bank reconciliation statements, calculating early payment discounts and differences between gross pay and net pay. In addition, bookkeeping terminology and its application are covered.
