Fri. Apr. 12, 2024 "Despite backlash, some Loblaw stores still discount perishable food by 30% — not 50%": Today I found this article by Sophia Harris on CBC:

Although Loblaw has now reinstated its popular 50 per cent discounts on perishable food, some customers say they still feel shortchanged.

That's because more than 100 Real Canadian Superstores owned by Loblaw continue to discount all food nearing its best-before date by only 30 per cent.

"I was disappointed," said Kim Siever when he recently visited his local Superstore in Lethbridge, Alta., and found no half-off deals.

Some stores offer deeper discounts

Loblaw Companies Ltd. sparked customer backlash in mid-January when the grocery giant said it was reducing its 50 per cent discounts to 30 per cent for perishables in all stores. Due to public outcry, Loblaw reversed the policy within days.

But the retailer told CBC News that doesn't mean half-off deals are available in every grocery store.

"All of the discounts went back to what they were previously, which ranged between 30-50% off depending on store type … and product," said Loblaw spokesperson Catherine Thomas in an email. "Customers enjoyed these, and we listened."

Even so, the company's public flip flop sparked new complaints, because it shed light on the fact that some of its grocery stores offer deeper discounts than others.

Several customers in Atlantic Canada told CBC News their Loblaw-owned Atlantic Superstores mark down all expiring food by 50 per cent, including bread, produce and meat.

CBC visited several Loblaw-owned No Frills and Loblaws stores in Toronto and Vancouver, and found that most items were also discounted by 50 per cent. However, meat often got a 30 per cent-off sticker.

Thomas said "most discount stores (like Real Canadian Superstore)" mark down all perishables by 30 per cent.

She did not say why discount chain No Frills and big-box Atlantic Superstores offer 50 per cent markdowns.

Apr. 17, 2024 "Mariska Hargitay, Dressed in Her “SVU” Gear, Mistaken for Real-Life Police Officer By Young Girl Looking for Her Mom": Today I found this article by Julia Moore on Yahoo.  Here's some good news:

Mariska Hargitay doesn’t just star as a heroic detective saving people’s lives onscreen — she also steps into those shoes in real life, too.

While filming one of the final episodes of season 25 of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit in New York City on April 10, Hargitay, 60, was approached by a little girl who believed her to be a real police officer based on the badge she wore as part of her character’s outfit.

A witness tells PEOPLE that the little girl had been separated from her mother in the Anne Loftus Playground in Fort Tryon Park and enlisted Hargitay for help. The actress obliged, halting production for 20 minutes to help the child locate her mother and to console them both.

The little girl was completely oblivious to the film crew — and to Hargitay’s scene partner, Ice-T — the witness notes, as she believed Hargitay to be an on-duty police officer.

Thurs. Apr. 11, 2024 Shoppers Drug Mart: I redeemed my 10,000 Shoppers Optimum points ($10).

I bought 6 bags of No Name chips and they were each 25% off.  I then bought 2 boxes of President's Choice The Decadent Chocolate Chunk Cookies for $6.

Total: $13.85.  I paid $3.85.

Sat. Apr. 13, 2024 Blenderz Garment Recyclers: My friend Tamara on Facebook went there.

I remember hearing about them at the Forest Terrace Heights Clothing Swap.

You can shop and donate clothes here:

Comic and Zine Fair: My friend Chase Kantor from the Edmonton Filmmakers Group posted this on Facebook.  This is a free event so I went there the for an hr this morning:

Our annual Comic and Zine Market returns this April! Featuring local artists working in comics, zines, multiples and other print media, there is something for everyone to enjoy. Browse our vendors’ displays, participate in art activities and pick up a few collectible treasures to give away or keep for yourself!

Situated in the AGA’s atrium, the market is organized to showcase talented local artists and foster a vibrant arts community. The market is free to experience and shop. Admission to the exhibitions is available at Guest Services if you want to extend your visit.

My opinion: They sold buttons, magnets, greeting cards, etc.  I talked to this woman who did a comic about Betty from the Archie Comics.  We talked about the show Riverdale, but she only watched the pilot.  I think her name was Danielle.

Apr. 13, 2024 "Proudly Outspoken Demo Toastmasters Meeting!": I RSVP last minute like 30 min. before this Zoom online event was to start.  The Organizer was to RSVP. She wasn't there and it was probably because she thought no one was coming.  That's fine.

Apr. 16, 2024 Friends pay for meal: I found this note that I wanted to write about.  I was working at the Soup Place #2.  This young white woman told me when I was working the till.

Woman: Do you see that guy in the pink shirt?  Don't let him pay for his food.  Also give him the change.
She gives me a $20 bill.
When the guy came by.
Tracy: Your friend paid for you.

I remember working at my Hotel Restaurant job and this woman paid before they're finished so they won't fight over the bill.

Apr. 17, 2024 Winter: It snowed and I shoveled some snow.  I didn't put away my winter jacket because it's still cold.

Apr. 19, 2024 Conversation Cafe- Conversations on Mental Health. Third Friday of the monthI went to this today.  I learned that Ghana doesn't have a lot of resources for mental health.  They chain people to trees to protect themselves and others.  I may have to go on the internet to research that.

I was talking to Eileen about TV shows like we both watch Law and Order: Organized Crime.  We always introduce ourselves and answer the ice breaker question.  I gave the question: "What TV shows are you watching?"

There are sitcoms like The Big Bang Theory and The Office.  There was 90 Day Fiance.
