Jul. 4, 2024 "Hudson's Bay Co. to purchase U.S. department store Neiman Marcus: reports": Today I found this article on BNN Bloomberg:
Hudson's Bay Co. has reached a deal to buy luxury department store chain Neiman Marcus, according to media reports.
Citing multiple sources, both the Wall Street Journal and New York Times reported the deal will see Toronto-based HBC pay US$2.65 billion for the U.S. retailer.
News of the deal follows months of speculation that HBC would buy the brand, whose website lists 36 U.S. locations selling designer apparel, accessories and housewares.
Neiman Marcus competes in the same segment of the retail market as HBC, which also owns Saks Fifth Avenue and Saks Off 5th.
HBC has spent recent years working to revamp its operations after closing Home Outfitters in 2019, the same year it sold Lord & Taylor to fashion rental subscription company Le Tote Inc.
The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Oct. 8, 2024 "Sears Is Looking for Rent Relief on Last-Standing Stores": Today I found this article by Reshmi Basu on BNN Bloomberg:
Now, Sears’ once-bright blue logo sits fading on abandoned, empty buildings in strip malls across the country, serving as a relic for passing drivers. And it’s struggling to hold onto less than a dozen stores it has left.
Sears is working with advisory firm Huron Consulting Group Inc. to help score rent concessions from its landlords of its remaining locations, according to people with knowledge of the matter, who asked not to be identified discussing the private talks. A representative for Huron declined to comment. Sears and its parent ESL Investments did not respond to requests for comment.
The department store chain, founded as Sears, Roebuck and Co. in 1893 and hailed in the 1980s as America’s largest retailer, has become a shell of itself.
In 2005, Sears was acquired by discount retailer Kmart, under the leadership of billionaire hedge fund manager Edward Lampert.
Over the next decade, the business was
splintered into 30 different divisions,
stores were shuttered
and thousands of employees were fired.
Compiled with years of underinvestment and plunging sales,
Sears snowballed into bankruptcy in 2018 with 687 stores,
down from 3,500 at the time of the Kmart deal.
Sears exited bankruptcy under the ownership of Lampert’s ESL Investments in 2022 with 22 stores in the US and Puerto Rico, but is now down to 11 locations, according to its website.
It has
four locations open in California,
two in Washington,
two in Florida
and one in Massachusetts, Texas and Puerto Rico.
Sears does not have any stores within 100 miles of New York City — it closed its last store in the area in 2021 — or Chicago, once its home city.
Big-box retailers have struggled to hold onto physical presences over the last four years,
after the pandemic led to an uptick in online shopping.
About 15% of all retail sales in the second quarter were online,
up from about 10% in 2019,
according to a report from the US Census Bureau.
Last year, Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. filed for bankruptcy, closing all of its stores and liquidating its assets in the process.
It cited a continued decline in sales, with fourth quarter sales in 2022 dropping $1 billion from a year prior.

Has the Canada Post strike affected you?
Yes 58.78% (2421)
No 41.22% (1698)
It started as a joke. Cameron Hurteau posted on social media, saying that with Canada Post workers on strike, he'd be willing to deliver people's mail. Since then he's delivered Christmas cards, a death notice, and even an inmate visitation form.
Though he drew the line at an oddball request to deliver a Christmas carol.
"I said, 'Do you mean kind of like a Christmas gram? Like, Buddy the Elf shows up and starts singing Christmas carols? I'm sure you don't hate the person enough for me to sing to them,'" Hurteau told Cost of Living.
Christmas carols aside, Hurteau, who lives in Kingston, Ont., has stumbled onto a need. Negotiations between Canada Post and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers have brought mail delivery across the country to a halt during the busy holiday season.
And with no clear signs of when the strike will end, people are looking for alternative ways to get their mail and packages out.
Hurteau, whose day job is doing maintenance at a hotel, says he was surprised by the number of people who responded to his social media post. When his friends suggested he post on Facebook Marketplace, he did that as well.
And it's been a success. So far Hurteau says he's done deliveries for about 50 to 60 different people and made about $2,500. And he's far from the only one.

Dec. 5, 2024 "From Brampton, Ont. to Taylor Swift's tours: How a cold email handed Jasmeet Sidhu an opportunity of a lifetime": Today I found this article by Corne Van Hoepen on Yahoo. I like this article because it's about a woman who follows her dreams and went to achieve her goal:
Jasmeet Sidhu, a Brampton native, has carved out an extraordinary path as a concert photographer, working with some of the world’s biggest stars, including Taylor Swift.
Her journey, sparked by a bold cold email to a music video director, has unfolded over a decade of breathtaking moments, culminating in her role capturing Taylor Swift's spectacular tours — including the record-breaking, globe-crossing Eras Tour.
“I didn’t have a university degree in the arts or connections in photography,” said Sidhu in an interview with Yahoo News Canada. “I knew I had to take the initiative to reach out and make connections.”
Sidhu’s journey with a camera didn’t begin until she was 16, but her passion for visual storytelling quickly took root. Fast forward to nearly a decade ago, driven by a growing desire to break into the music video industry, she decided to take a bold leap.
Fresh out of graduate school at Columbia University in New York, she made the decision to move to Los Angeles driven by her dream of working in music videos.
"I knew I had to be in Los Angeles to just set myself to be in a position to meet people like that music video director to start my creative career," said Sidhu.
With no connections to rely on, she fired off a cold email to a music video director she deeply admired — hoping, against the odds, that it might open a door.
"Would you ever want to sit down and have a coffee?" Sidhu recalls writing in the email she sent. His reply ultimately changed the course of her life, as he invited her to shadow him on the set of Taylor Swift’s "I Knew You Were Trouble" from her album Red.

Latest Online Scam – Don’t Fall For This!
LATEST ONLINE SCAM:
The Police are warning the public about a recent rise in e-transfer scams on websites like Facebook marketplace.
There are scammers that look like real accounts that are targeting buyers on platforms like Kijiji and Facebook Marketplace.
This is where a buyer sends an email that looks like a legitimate e-transfer.
When the seller clicks the link to accept the payment,
they are taken to a fake website designed to look like their bank’s site.
After entering their login details, the scammers steal their information and gain access to their bank account.
So far this month, victims have lost over $6,700 to this scam. My sister being one of them, by the way. It’s a nightmare having to then focus all your energy on changing your information.
The transfer website had ONE LETTER that was different. CHECK EVERYTHING AND BE SAFE. – Lisa

My opinion: You should meet the buyer in person at a police station and pay in cash.
