My week:

Feb. 12, 2022 Immigrant Access Fund:  I found this in my old physical news articles:

IAF provides micro loans of up to $10,000 to internationally trained immigrants so they can obtain the Canadian licensing or training they need to work in their field. The loan can pay for exams, training, qualification assessments, professional association fees, books and course materials, living allowance and other expenses related to obtaining the Canadian licensing or training they need.

IAF is a character-based community lending program funded by both the private and public sectors.

More Information:

Immigrant Access Fund Canada supports immigrants, including refugees, who arrive in Canada equipped with excellent professional skills and knowledge but face significant barriers to employment. Often they fall into poverty as they become stuck in unemployment or low paying “survival” jobs. As they lack income, collateral or credit history in Canada, it is difficult if not impossible for them to access mainstream credit.

Windmill Microlending:

About - Windmill Microlending

My opinion: This was a long time ago, but I was watching the Canadian newsmagazine show W-Five.  I don't know like 2003-2005?  They did an episode about how there are immigrants who move to Canada, but they can't get careers here because companies or the government don't exactly recognize the diploma or degree from their country and they wouldn't be qualified for the career.

They are qualified for the career.  I remember a Chinese woman in her late 30s-40s and she has a kid in elementary school.  The best job she could get was a telemarketer.

They interviewed an East Indian couple in 30s- 40s and I think they were in Edmonton.  The woman was able to get an administrative assistant job.  The white man boss said she was a good worker.

The Cleaning Lady:

"A whip-smart Cambodian doctor comes to the U.S. for a medical treatment to save her son, but when the system fails and pushes her into hiding, she uses her cunning and intelligence to fight back, breaking the law for all the right reasons."

The Cleaning Lady (TV Series 2022– ) - IMDb

My opinion: I'm also watching this show right now because I got a few episodes saved.  I like to watch a new TV show by watching the eps in a week.

Thony is a doctor and working as a cleaning lady.  She is in the US temporarily to get treatment for her son.  As soon as her son gets well, she will move back to her country.

The show is mainly how she is working for the mob by cleaning up after them, and the FBI wanting to turn her into a CI.  There's lots of drama, conflict, and tension.

I love Adan Canto as the mob boss Arman.  Not everybody on the show is all a good or bad guy.

The show is on CTV and Fox on Mon. nights at 10pm.  You can watch the episodes if you have Telus on Demand.

Feb. 17, 2022: I was watching the episode "Mother's Mission" where Thony meets a Nigerian doctor.

Doctor: I was a doctor in Nigeria and then I came to the US, and they told me I had to my med school and residency here.

I told this to my little brother P and he knows about how Canada and the US don't recognize other country's degrees.

Feb. 15, 2022 "Elon Musk donated US$5.7B of Tesla shares to charity": Today I found this article by Sophie Alexander and Craig Trudell on Bloomberg News:

Elon Musk gifted almost US$6 billion worth of Tesla Inc. stock to charity late last year in one of the largest philanthropic donations in history.

The world’s richest man donated more than 5 million shares in the electric-car maker from Nov. 19 to Nov. 29, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The gift was worth about US$5.7 billion, based on average prices the days he sold the securities. The filing doesn’t name the charity and shows an unidentified trust was involved in the transaction.

The donation occurred as Musk, Tesla’s chief executive officer, sparred with politicians including Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren over inequality and a proposed wealth tax. In the weeks leading up to the gift, Musk suggested he’d sell stock if the United Nations proved US$6 billion would help solve world hunger, after the head of the organization’s World Food Programme called for billionaires like Musk to “step up.”

The Steve Nash Foundation: I found this in old physical news articles:

Working to increase access to critical needs resources for children in underserved communities and populations.

The Foundation focuses its resources on underserved populations of children at home in British Columbia and around the world.  By supporting existing organizations with funding and technical assistance, and by thoughtfully addressing global and local challenges by innovating in and collaborating on critical areas of inquiry, we work to implement strategies that empower communities.  Areas of focus include early childhood development and health, and neuroscience around child abuse and neglect, with a goal of improved outcomes for children of all socio-economic backgrounds.

When we give kids attention, we give our communities hope.
