"Degree in what?"/ "Good manners are good business"

Nov. 11, 2015 "Degree in what?": I cut out this article by Sparrow McGowan in 24 News on Apr. 29, 2013.  This article is aimed at people who recently graduated out of college.  There are good tips to motivate and inspire you on your job search:

As the semester comes to an end, thousands of students will leave the world of academia behind them. To help you make the exciting – but often nerve-wracking – next step, we asked a selection of university career advisers the following question:

“If you could give one piece of advice to students graduating from university this April, what would it be?”

Here are their answers:

Prepare by asking yourself the ‘why’ questions

“Graduating from university can be an exciting time as you decide the next step in your career plan. Make time to get to know who you are, and explore career options depending on your interests and abilities. Discover your skills, abilities, interests, values and preferences.

While starting your career plan, review prior paid and unpaid work, as well as learning and leisure activities. Be able to answer the “so what” and “why” questions. For example, ask yourself the “so what” of completing an undergrad degree in ABC. What skills, abilities or knowledge did you gain from your degree that can transfer to a potential employer? Asking “why” questions will help you develop genuine and meaningful answers.

Finding a job takes persistence, creativity, and various job search strategies. If you know yourself well, you can narrow your occupational choices, create an effective resumé, and be confident in interviews. Remember the career planning process is a lifelong process. Learn to appreciate the change and uncertainty that accompanies career planning and look for the opportunities that emerge along the way.”

Don’t discount any of your skills

“Assume all of your skills might be important to employers. Students who have just graduated, especially those with some graduate work behind them, sometimes assume that the skills most clearly related to their academics are the most important. But the skills you didn’t spend as much time on may be the ones that land you your next job. It could be the handful of web pages you designed for student groups or the conference you helped organized, rather than the papers you wrote, that will convince an employer to take a chance on you.

Don’t feel obligated to detail your academic work just because you’ve devoted a significant amount of time to it. Of course, in order to figure out what to emphasize, you need to research the jobs you’re interested in. That consists partly of a close reading of job postings, but also happens through participating in or lurking on relevant professional group discussion boards (such as the kind you can join for free on, joining “real live” professional organizations, and talking with as many people as you can find who are doing the kind of work you think you might want to do.”

PhDs – do your research

“To the graduating PhDs considering non-academic options: There are many opportunities for flexible thinkers and independent learners in the knowledge economy, but few of these will be found on job posting sites, so don’t spend more than 25 percent of your ‘job search’ distributing resumés online. Instead, invest your time in researching organizations involved in activities that you are curious about. You’ll want to find out:

  • How does information flows – how do they keep up on what’s new and changing?
  • How does money flow in that environment – where does it come from and how is it spent?
  • Who does what – what did they do before this?
  • Who else is doing this – organizations, competitors?
  • What’s working well and what’s not?

With this information in hand, you will have a much better idea if there is a place for someone like you there and whether or not you would enjoy that environment; you can be more strategic about how to get involved – informally through volunteer work, or formally through a job-contract or ongoing employment; and, most importantly, people in that field will know you exist and how to reach you.”

Be open to the unexpected

“My biggest advice for new university graduates is to embrace the chaos that transitioning from one stage of life to another inevitably involves. This comes down to three key points. It’s no longer realistic to expect to have a linear career path, so the first is to avoid overcommitting to long-term plans. In a career context, it’s more beneficial to be short-sighted – to act and react to the variables immediately in front of you. The more skillfully you can navigate short-term goals and contexts, the more likely you are to encounter previously unexpected opportunities.

Of course, being able to recognize and adapt to these unplanned events is crucial, so try to learn to expect the unexpected. This means being open to new experiences and being willing to change direction if necessary. The final ingredient is hope. Without it, the smallest of tasks can seem impossible. With hope comes motivation, perseverance, and action – absolutely necessary elements of any job search. So, to summarize: forget the plan, expect the unexpected, and stay hopeful!”

Get moving!

“My one piece of advice to new graduates is “get to work” – quickly! Finding work is a full-time job and often requires some strategic planning and action – and lots of perseverance, tenacity and courage. Be clear about what you are looking for! Don’t be one of the people that say they are looking for anything. Be strategic on how you can get a job. Who are potential employers? Who could you ask for help? Get out there, meet with people and network. Volunteer for an organization or non-profit – this is a great way to network and develop skills while you are looking.

Be “doing” along with “looking”. Be flexible with your expectations. Sometimes casual and part-time jobs, term positions and contracts are great ways to gain some experience. Any experience related to your career will set you on the path for a full time, permanent position. Do SOMETHING related to your ideal career, do a great job and more opportunities will follow!”

At a recent business luncheon one of the guests blew his nose in his napkin. Another guest wore jeans and a sheer blouse. Are these appropriate business behaviors?

Do you practice such basic courtesies as returning messages promptly, and greeting people when they enter your office? Does your organization have uniform policies regarding emails, punctuality, and kitchen use?

Good manners are good business. Many potentially profitable alliances or promotional opportunities are lost because of unintentional bad manners. Second chances aren’t always possible.

Test Your Business Etiquette

Which of the following demonstrate appropriate business etiquette?

  1. Your boss, Ms. Andrews, enters the room when you’re meeting with a client, Mr. Block. You rise and say, “Ms. Andrews, I’d like you to meet Mr. Block, our Chicago client.
  2. You answer the phone for a colleague and ask “Who’s calling please?”
  3. In a restaurant, you drink thin soup served in a cup with no handles.
  4. The male pays when he’s having a business meeting at a restaurant with a female colleague.
  5. When you greet a visitor in your office, you let him sit where he wishes.
  6. You leave a luncheon meeting after two hours.
  7. You’re scheduled to meet an associate for a working lunch. If she hasn’t arrived after 30 minutes, you order and eat.
  8. Name tags should be placed on the right shoulder.
  9. It’s acceptable to make sales pitches at networking functions.
  10. It’s appropriate to give business cards to everyone at business meetings.
  11. It’s appropriate to take phone calls while in meetings.
  12. It’s important to hold doors open for women.
  13. It’s okay not to attend office parties.
  14. It’s correct for women to extend their hands when greeting others.
  15. At a business luncheon, I can eat and answer questions at the same time.
  16. If I have a hot meal at a business dinner, I start eating before it gets cold.
  17. If I get something stuck in my teeth at a business reception, I remove it with a toothpick.
  18. I multitask while talking to a colleague.
  19. It’s appropriate to wear tattered jeans on casual work days.

1. Inappropriate. Introduce or name the more important person first.  In business, clients hold the highest authority.
The person of lesser importance, regardless of gender, is introduced to the person of greater importance. “Mr. Greater Authority (Mr. Block), I’d like to introduce Ms. Lesser Authority (Ms. Andrews).”

2. Inappropriate.  Asking “Who’s calling?” suggests calls are screened. To avoid insults, the person answering the phone could announce the individual’s unavailability, then ask for the caller’s name and message.
To avoid screening, announce yourself at the beginning of calls. By stating your name, you’re sending a subliminal message that you have a right to speak to the person.

3. Inappropriate. Use the spoon provided.

4. Inappropriate. The person who benefits from the business association pays, regardless of gender. Clarify you’re hosting when extending invitations.

5. Inappropriate. Indicating where your guest should sit will make him feel more comfortable.

6. Appropriate. Allow two hours for business lunches. Start discussing business after the appetizer has been served.

7. Appropriate. Also, expect an apology.

8. Appropriate.  When shaking hands, your eyes follow the line of the arm to the person’s right side. By placing the tag on the right, you can read the name while shaking hands.

9. Inappropriate. You’ll be perceived as pushy, needy, insensitive, or inexperienced.

10. Inappropriate. Wait until you’ve established a reason to make further contact before exchanging cards. This enhances the value of the exchange.

11. Inappropriate. Taking calls while in a meeting is rude. It says others are more important than the person with whom you’re meeting.

12. Inappropriate. Business etiquette is based on hierarchy and power, unlike social etiquette which is based on gender and chivalry.

Doors are held open for persons more senior in rank, regardless of gender. The person, who gets to the door first, holds it open for people following.

13. Inappropriate. Not attending shows disrespect.

14. Appropriate. A firm handshake made with direct eye contact sets the stage for a positive encounter.

15. Inappropriate. Never speak with food in your mouth, Take small bites so you can quickly finish and swallow the food before speaking. You may not have enough time to eat everything if you’re asked many questions, but remember, you’re meeting to discuss business.

16. Inappropriate. Don’t begin eating until all meals are served and your host takes the first bite. If water is on the table, sip it after everyone is seated.

17. Inappropriate. Toothpicks should be used in private. If food gets stuck in your teeth try to remove it with your tongue. If this doesn’t work, excuse your self and go to the restroom.

18. Inappropriate. If you are in a face-to-face conversation with someone, do not text, email, or answer calls.

19. Inappropriate. Casual is not sloppy. Your team needs to know what appropriate dress and ‘’business casual” mean at your organization. Ensure casual dress does not lead to a casual attitude.

Business manners can advance your career and enhance the reputation of your organization. Present yourself with confidence and authority. Consider others’ feelings. Be courteous, respectful, and considerate to everyone. “Please” and “thank you” are still magic words.
