"‘All American’, ‘Homecoming’ & ‘Walker’ Will Continue As Long As They Perform, Says CW Chief: “It’s No Longer A Financial Question”"/ "The CW Bosses Explain Why ‘All American’ & ‘Walker’ Aren’t On Its Fall Schedule"

Feb. 18, 2024 "‘All American’, ‘Homecoming’ & ‘Walker’ Will Continue As Long As They Perform, Says CW Chief: “It’s No Longer A Financial Question”": Today I found this article by Peter White on Deadline:

The CW is hoping to keep its trio of scripted originals – All AmericanAll American: Homecoming and Walker – on the air for some time.

The network scaled back its scripted ambitions after it was acquired by Nexstar in 2022 with a number of shows ending over the last twelve months including The Flash, Riverdale, Nancy Drew, Walker: Independence, The Winchesters and Gotham Knights.

Its fourth scripted original Superman & Lois is heading into its fourth and final season this year.

The CW President of Entertainment Brad Schwartz said that it’s no longer an “financial” question as to whether it will keep these Warner Bros. Television and CBS Studios going past their current seasons.

“CBS and Warner Bros have been so wonderful working with us on those shows and we’ve gotten both of those shows to an economic area, where as long as they keep rating, there’s no reason why we can’t keep them. It’s no longer a financial question, it’s a creative and performance question,” he said at The CW’s TCA press tour.

Deadline understands that The CW was able to keep the license fees low enough for these three shows to a level that was able to work for it.

Given the international sales of All American, All American: Homecoming, which are both produced by Warner Bros. Television, and Walker, which is produced by CBS Studios, it also works for the two previous owners of The CW.

All American, in particular, also has a lucrative streaming deal with Netflix, as part of a wider arrangement between the streamer and The CW that started in 2011 and ended in 2019.

All American is heading into its sixth season. The high school football drama stars Taye Diggs, Monet Mazur, Daniel Ezra, Cody Christian, Samantha Logan, Hunter Clowdus, Michael Evans Behling, Greta Onieogou, Bre-Z, Karimah Westbrook, Jayln Hall and Chelsea Tavares.

It comes from Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television and CBS Studios, and is exec produced by Nkechi Okoro Carroll, Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, John A. Norris, Jameal Turner, Mike Herro and David Strauss.

Spinoff All American: Homecoming is set at HBCU college at Bringston University. It is heading into its third season. The series stars Geffri Maya, Cory Hardrict, Sylvester Powell, Camille Hyde, Mitchell Edwards, Netta Walker and Rhoyle Ivy King.

All American: Homecoming is created and executive produced by Nkechi Okoro Carroll who serves as co-showrunner alongside executive producer Marqui Jackson. Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Robbie Rogers, and Lindsay Dunn also serve as executive producers. The series is produced by Berlanti Productions, Rock My Soul Productions and CBS Studios in association with Warner Bros. Television.

Walker, starring Jared Padalecki, is heading into its fourth season. The CW’s reimagining of the popular CBS drama Walker, Texas Ranger, Walker centers on Cordell Walker (Padalecki), a widower and father of two with his own moral code who returns home to Austin after being undercover for two years, only to discover there’s harder work to be done at home.

The cast also includes Ashley Reyes, Keegan Allen, Violet Brinson, Molly Hagan, Kale Culley, Coby Bell, Jeff Pierre, Mitch Pileggi and Odette Annable.

Walker is written and executive produced by Anna Fricke, and executive produced by Dan Lin, Lindsey Liberatore, Padalecki, Steve Robin and Russel Friend. The series is from CBS Studios in association with Rideback.

  • Charlie

Personally happy to see Walker coming back and possible safe for another season (5). 2024 is already crazy ahead of the national election and I need my comfort shows.

  • SL Mon

I could have sworn that CW was cancelling all its scripted shows after cancellation bloodbaths two years in a row. I hope that they do renew these 3 shows. Better yet, let them reconsider some of their recent cancellation decisions.

  • CW Is A Joke Now

Warner Bros cancelled 13 TV shows so these jerks could acquire The CW. They sold it for debt, not money. They ruined that network

  • Juzzy

I’d watch the CW again if they decided to invest and give Ride a second season. Otherwise, there is nothing left to watch on there anymore.

They don’t the thing is they have no other things to fill time. They don’t have the money for the other sports leagues. They should have went in on the PFL/Bellator when they were available.

    • The CW (RIP)

They gutted half the cast on those remaining shows. I won’t be watching

    • Agent

They say that now – I’ll believe CW when I see the shows renewed for another season. And will they add more original scripted dramas – or just keep importing Canadian and Aussie productions.

It is ALWAYs a financial decision. Who does he think he is fooling???? Idiot.

he could also mean that Netflix viewership stats could make a bigger difference.

  • May 16, 2024 "The CW Bosses Explain Why ‘All American’ & ‘Walker’ Aren’t On Its Fall Schedule": Today I found this article by Peter White on Deadline:

All American and Walker are two of The CW’s biggest shows.

So, it was somewhat of a surprise that neither show has been handed a renewal and a spot on the network’s fall schedule, which was unveiled this morning.

The CW bosses Dennis Miller and Brad Schwartz explained why this is the case but said that there are ongoing conversations with the studios behind these shows with Schwartz promising that a decision on All American will happen “soon”.

Both shows are expensive and as Deadline has explained before, financials for all three homegrown dramas are challenging, particularly for Walker, which won’t be able to continue unless its very low license fee is raised by the network.

Schwartz, who is President of Entertainment at The CW, told Deadline, “We didn’t feel any need to rush to meet some Upfront deadline.

All American is on the air right now, so we’re seeing how that does. Walker is about [seven] episodes in. We don’t need to make a decision on those anytime soon, unless except for some artificial Upfront deadline. I feel like we have really gotten to a 12 month a year development and greenlight cycle. You’ll hear some pickups in the next few weeks.”

All American has a slightly different financial model, given its deal with Netflix. “That makes it a little more interesting for everybody,” he added. “We’ll be making a decision on that soon. We’re talking about it right now.”

The show was recently handed two extra episodes.

“On Walker, we’ve had many conversations, Dennis has had some conversations recently as well, many conversations with CBS [Studios] about continuing or not continuing that show,” he added.

Miller alluded to issues with streaming when it comes to these big scripted shows.

“It appears that you really need to have a multi-platform architecture in order to do scripted programming,” said The CW President Miller.

“It became a question of strategically what kind of SVOD or AVOD deal should we have so we could justify the economics of scripted.”

He added that the company was looking at either doing

a package deal for a number of its shows with a streamer

    or parceling them out individually.

Both of these are “options we’ve talked about”.

Asked whether a streaming deal could see all three shows saved, Miller said he doesn’t think it’s “cause/effect”. “But that is a critical component for our scripted strategy. We’re telling suppliers when they come in now, think of us as a critical first step to market this IP but we need that other piece to make it work,” he added.

All American: Homecoming, meanwhile, does not launch until the summer.

Schwartz said that he believes this year’s fall schedule is as “strong” as The CW has ever had. “It might not have all the big shiny superhero shows on it but it’s broadening our audience in a way that we needed to grow.

The final season of Superman & Lois is on the schedule, alongside Canadian drama Sullivan’s Crossing but there are plenty of shows in limbo including drama Family Law, which was renewed by Global for a fourth season in January.

There will be plenty of sports on the schedule including WWE NXT on Tuesday; ACC Football, NASCAR Xfinity Series and Pac-12 Football on Saturday; as well as Inside the NFL, moving from Thursday to Friday in its second season on the CW.

“Wrestling is going to probably be our biggest night of the week,” Schwartz added. “There’s some weekends where we have 14 hours of consecutive sports.

Every night of the week kind of feels really good, every night of the week kind of feels like we’re bringing new audiences Sullivan’s Crossing brings an audience to us that hadn’t been on The CW before.

Superman and Lois and The Librarians bring an audience we have had before, game shows brings a different audience.”
