EXCLUSIVE: ABC has handed a pilot order to Do You Want Kids?,
a single-camera comedy starring Rachel Bloom in her return to broadcast TV after co-creating and headlining the CW’s Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.
Bloom co-wrote the pilot script for the 20th Television-produced Do You Want Kids with her husband, film and TV writer Dan Gregor.
The duo executive produce with Steven Levitan and Danielle Stokdyk of the 20th TV-based Levitan Productions.
This marks the first comedy pilot order — and second overall — at ABC this year.
The project, which landed at ABC as a pitch last October in competitive situation, was among the hot prospects this past spring,
when the network greenlighted its first pilot of 2025, drama RJ Decker, and again this summer as ABC brass were making “second cycle” pickup decisions.
The ABC summer 2025 pilot buzz roster also included
the Scrubs reboot, which has since been ordered straight-to-series;
the potential Rookie spinoff, The Rookie North,
which continues to look for a leading man;
and comedy Mittens.
ABC has two new scripted series for 2025-26 so far — both IP extensions and both picked up straight-to-series
— 9-1-1: Nashville, which premieres in the fall,
and Scrubs, set for midseason.
Do You Want Kids? is about a husband and wife — played by Bloom
— who in one universe have a baby
and the other do not,
and the many ways that huge decision alters their lives.
In real life, Bloom and Gregor are a married couple with a child.
This marks a reunion for Bloom with Levitan, Stokdyk and 20th TV; she played one of the leads in Levitan Hulu comedy series Reboot, which was produced by 20th TV.
Bloom won an Emmy and a Golden Globe for her work on Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.
She was recently cast in the upcoming The Devil Wears Prada 2 movie, written by Crazy Ex-Girlfriend co-creator Aline Brosh McKenna and directed by David Frankel.
Bloom’s one-woman stage show, Death, Let Me Do My Show, which was nominated for a Drama Desk Award this year, was filmed for a Netflix special, which is now streaming. She is repped by Sugar23, WME, YMU Entertainment, and Ginsburg Daniel Kallis.
Gregor, who was a writer-producer on Crazy Ex-Girlfriend
and CBS’ How I Met Your Mother,
recently co-wrote the Naked Gun reboot for Paramount, starring Liam Neeson.
He previously co-wrote the Emmy-winning Chip N’ Dale Rescue Rangers live-action/animated movie for Disney+ and co-wrote and directed SXSW selection Most Likely to Murder for Lionsgate and Hulu. Gregor is repped by UTA, Kaplan/Perrone, and Hansen, Jacobson, Teller.
Levitan Productions also has Erin Foster’s breakout hit Netflix comedy Nobody Wants This, which is returning for a second season.

Sept. 29, 2025 "ABC Picks Up Scott Speedman Pilot ‘RJ Decker’ To Series For Midseason 2026; A Role Will Be Recast": Today I found this article by Nellie Andreeva on Deadline.
I watched the whole first season of this show and I liked it for the mystery.
In the article it said this: "The series-regular role of Shay Bennett, played by Weruche Opia in the pilot, will be recast."
However, there is no character by that name here.
ABC has given a series order to hourlong pilot RJ Decker (working title), starring Scott Speedman, for the current 2025-26 season. The project, from Elementary creator Rob Doherty based on the 1987 novel Double Whammy by Carl Hiaasen, will premiere in midseason.
In addition to Speedman in the titular role, RJ Decker stars
Kevin Rankin as Aloysius “Wish” Aiken,
Adelaide Clemens as Catherine Delacroix
and Bevin Bru as Melody “Mel” Romero.
The series-regular role of Shay Bennett, played by Weruche Opia in the pilot, will be recast.
Delivered to the network earlier this month, the pilot, from 20th Television, was well received with Speedman’s performance getting high marks. In mixing
crime procedural drama
with humor
and a compelling lead character,
RJ Decker fits into ABC’s sweet spot of hits like
High Potential,
The Rookie
and Will Trent.
Reinforcing the spiritual connection, Paul McGuigan, who directed the Will Trent pilot, was also brought in to helm the RJ Decker pilot.
Written by Doherty, the series centers on RJ Decker (Speedman), is a disgraced newspaper photographer and ex-con who starts over as a private investigator in the colorful-if-crime-filled world of South Florida.
The series follows him tackle cases that range from slightly odd to outright bizarre with the help of his journalist ex, her police detective wife, and a shadowy new benefactor, a woman from his past who could be his greatest ally… or his one-way ticket back to prison.
The pilot was shot in North Carolina, the filming location for the series is TBD. Doherty executive produces alongside Hiaasen, Carl Beverly, Sarah Timberman and McGuigan, with Speedman serving as a producer. 20th Television, a part of Disney TV Studios, is the studio.
Speedman also has been recurring on 20th TV’s long-running ABC medical drama Grey’s Anatomy.
This is the second TV series based on the works of Florida native Hiaasen, who started his career as a newspaper reporter, joining Bill Lawrence’s Bad Monkey starring Vince Vaughn for Apple TV+, which has been renewed for a second season.
RJ Decker is the only drama pilot ordered by ABC so far this year. (The network’s new fall 2025 drama, 9-1-1: Nashville, received a straight-to-series order.)
Waiting in the wings is The Rookie spinoff The Rookie North, which has not been formally greenlighted yet, with creator Alexi Hawley looking at a late-winter pilot shoot.
ABC and 20th TV brass are taking their time casting the lead, looking to take a page from the RJ Decker (and The Rookie) playbook by landing a TV star of the caliber of Speedman and Nathan Fillion for The Rookie offshoot.
On the comedy side, ABC recently gave a straight-to-series order to the Scrubs reboot
and picked up to pilot the Rachel Bloom starrer Do You Want Kids?. That pilot is also expected to take its time finding the male lead opposite Bloom; it’s targeted for 2026-27 season.
The network’s other comedy prospect, Mittens, which revolves around a neighborhood cat, will be in consideration for the next pilot cycle.
