My week:

Jun. 15, 2022 "Shaquille O’Neal pays for meals of all diners in a restaurant following date, report says":

Today I found this article by Kate Ng on Yahoo news.  I liked to read about charity and good deeds:

Shaquille O’Neal has reportedly footed the bill for all customers in a New York City restaurant where he had been on a date.

The former Los Angeles Lakers star was on a date with an unidentified woman at the Jue Lan Club, a popular Chinese restaurant that seats up to 275 diners.

O’Neal, 50, reportedly shelled out more than US$25,000 (£20,686) to pay for the entire restaurant, in which there were 40 tables seated, and left an “extremely generous” tip for the staff.

Page Six quoted a source as saying that the woman O’Neal was dining with described the ex-basketballer as “my date” and “did all the ordering”.

The source added: “And to top that off, he paid for everyone’s check [who was] dining at the restaurant.

“He left [staff] the biggest tip they’ve ever received.”

O’Neal is said to have asked the restaurant to keep his gesture a secret from the other diners and not to mention that he had paid the bill until he left the restaurant.

The seven-foot-tall sports analyst was previously romantically linked to Empire actor Annie Ilonzeh.

From 2002 to 2011, he was married to television personality Shaunie O’Neal, who remarried earlier this year to a pastor. They share four children together.

In April, O’Neal said he was to blame for the divorce, adding that Shaunie had been “awesome” throughout their marriage.

“I was bad. She was awesome. She really was. It was all me,” he told The Pivot Podcast.

While he did not elaborate on what he did wrong, he admitted that he “wasn’t protecting her and protecting those vows”.

“Sometimes when you live that double life, you get caught up. I’m not going to say it was her. It was all me.”

O’Neal also opened up about feeling lonely and “lost” after the divorce and said: “76,000-square foot house by yourself, lost. No kids, go to the gym, nobody’s playing in the gym. You go to their room, nobody’s there. You start to feel it.”

Jun. 20, 2022 "The final countdown to banning some single-use plastics in Canada begins today": Today I found this article by Mia Rabson on CBC news.  This is about saving the environment which I like:

Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault says Canada will ban companies from importing or making plastic bags and Styrofoam takeout containers by the end of this year, their sale by the end of next year and their export by the end of 2025.

The move to ban exports will be a welcome change for environment advocates who were dismayed that Canada's initial plan was to ban the items at home but continue to ship them abroad.

Guilbeault is publishing the final regulations enacting the ban today.

In addition to bags and takeout boxes, the ban will affect plastic straws, bags, cutlery, stir sticks and six-pack rings that hold cans and bottles.

There is some limited exception for straws to accommodate people with disabilities.

The Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup project in 2019 removed more than 163,000 kilograms of plastic waste from nearly 4,000 kilometres of shoreline in Canada. The documented haul included more than 12,000 plastic bottles, 12,480 plastic straws and almost 17,000 plastic bags.

Federal data show in 2019, 15.5 billion plastic grocery bags, 4.5 billion pieces of plastic cutlery, three billion stir sticks, 5.8 billion straws, 183 million six-pack rings and 805 million takeout containers were sold in Canada.

Many fast food outlets replaced plastic straws with paper versions over the last several years as well.

"Canadian summer camps facing staff shortages, climbing costs": Today I found this article by Sarah Smellie on the BNN Bloomberg:

Though health restrictions have lifted and demand has returned, summer camp operators across the country say they're grappling with staffing issues driven by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Craig Douglas, executive director of Timberline Ranch in Maple Ridge, B.C. said Saturday it was harder to hire staff this year than in any of the previous 16 years he's been with the organization.

Douglas, also the vice-president of the British Columbia Camps Association, said Timberline is not alone: many camp operators have been forced to cut programs or accept fewer campers because they can't find enough people to work.

"The end result, unfortunately, is that fewer kids may get to go to camp this summer," he said.

But the shutdowns cut off a key source of staff for many camps, he added. Campers aging out of summer programs will often return in the next few years to work as counsellors, and operators rely on that pipeline, he said. The COVID-19 pandemic broke that link in the chain.

During the pandemic, those first aid and wilderness survival courses weren't offered, which means the staff leading the trips this year needed a lot of expensive, time-consuming training and recertification. Georgiade said his company arranged and paid for it.

"You basically have to make it as easy as possible for them, or that's a barrier for entry," he said.

My opinion: If you're looking for a job, then you can apply to work at a summer camp.  I don't really want to work there.  I'll go to restaurants, stores, and call centres.

Jun. 19, 2022 The Vegetarian and Vegan Meetup/ potluck: I was there and met some new people.  I brought my friend Cham along.  Someone took a pic.  I'm sitting on the far left.

Jun. 20, 2022 Brew and Bloom: Have you heard of this restaurant/ flower shop?  My friend Mei posted this.  The food looks delicious.  They sell flowers and beauty oil.

Jenn Ford: I wrote about her before.  Her bundles are for makeup, but there is shampoo.

"Dumped on reality TV" (The Bachelor Canada)/ "A Taste of Love" TV show/ "Ford family house fire" charity

Here's her Facebook post:

A few ways you can help us get back on our feet.
We are so amazed at the support of our community, family and friends.
We won't be getting much for insurance and we won't see it for a while. So, I am working on ways we can raise some recovery funds without feeling like mooches.
Here are just a few ideas. These bundles, and anything you buy, brings a minimum of 50% of the sale to our Fire Recovery Fund. Currently, this month it will bring in 68%
Some of the math on these is only for 50%.
I'll be putting more ideas and bundles out. Thank you so much to all of you. We are so grateful to have such an amazing village.

Jun. 24, 2022 West Edmonton Mall: Yesterday I had a day off. I went here and had fun by shopping. I was mainly looking around and at clothes, jewelry, home decor, etc.

There are a lot of new stores that opened or will be opening there like Shoppers Drug Mart.
