Canadian Payroll Association (CPA) Certification programs

Mar. 30, 2019:  I want to improve my skills on how to get an administrative assistant job, so I'm researching college programs.

Canadian Payroll Association (CPA) Certification Programs

Overview

The Canadian Payroll Association (CPA) offers the only payroll certifications in Canada:  the Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) and the Certified Payroll Manager (CPM).  These programs prepare payroll practitioners to manage the compliance requirements of an organization's annual payroll cycle, deliver clear and reliable payroll information, and contribute a payroll perspective to organizational policy and strategy discussions.
Payroll is a growing field and those holding Payroll designations earn higher salaries than those who don't.  Check out our full and part time course options today.
For all Payroll programs and courses, students are required to register with the Canadian Payroll Association and pay their associated fees.  Students in our full time offering qualify for a student rate with the Association.

Launching New Full Time Payroll Program

NAIT now offers a full time Professional Payroll Program in addition to our part time courses. The Program runs from early September until the beginning of March every year.  Students take the required courses for the Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) designation.  Additional courses that typically round out the skills required of payroll professionals such as Sage, Business Communications, Word and Excel are included.

We also provide training in areas of time management, change management and networking so that our students are fully prepared to enter the workforce.  Students participate in networking sessions with industry professionals so that they can get a head start on their job search.

The courses are full days Tuesday's to Fridays.

Program Model / Completion Requirements

Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP)
The PCP certification is the foundation of your career in payroll.  It provides you with the compliance knowledge required to process an organization's annual payroll cycle, effectively communicate payroll information to all stakeholders, and understand the accounting function as it relates to payroll.
PCP Required Courses:
  •     Payroll Compliance Legislation CPAY455
  •     Payroll Fundamentals I  CPAY460
  •     Introduction to Financial Accounting ACCT1115
  •     Payroll Fundamentals II CPAY465
PCP - Payroll Experience Requirement:
Individuals who wish to obtain the Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) certification must have at least one (1) year of weighted payroll experience obtained within five (5) years before or five (5) years after the start of the Payroll Compliance Legislation course. The weighted payroll experience must be equivalent to one year of experience paying employees accurately and on time, in compliance with legislative requirements, contributing to the full annual payroll cycle.
Students will be eligible to submit the PCP Work Experience Requirement Application (WERA) after completing the PCP payroll courses and transferring the Introduction to Accounting course credit into their CPA  files. The WERA must be approved by the CPA before submitting the Certification Declaration.

Certified Payroll Manager (CPM)

This certification builds on the PCP compliance knowledge preparing seasoned professionals to manage a payroll department.  It provides you with the knowledge to make decisions, supervise and manage, and contribute a payroll perspective to organizational policy and strategy discussions.  Prior to enrolling in the CPM program, students must have achieved the PCP certification, and must submit the Payroll Experience Prerequisite Application (see below) and receive approval from the CPA.  These prerequisites ensure students have the knowledge and practical payroll experience required to be successful in a payroll management program.
Effective January 1, 2017, the Canadian Payroll Association (CPA) is implementing a five-year timeline for all Certified Payroll Manager (CPM) students to complete the requirements of the CPM certification, including Declaration.  This timeline, similar to other professional associations, will increase the value of the CPM certification by ensuring the recency of education requirements.
CPM Required Courses:
  •     Introduction to Payroll Management CPAY470  *(prerequisites:  PCP & Payroll Experience Prerequisite Application (PEPA)
  •     Organizational Behaviour ORGB1135 **
  •     Managerial Accounting ACCT1117
  •     Applied Payroll Management CPAY475
  •     Compensation Management HRMT3328 **
CPM - Payroll Experience Prerequisite Application (PEPA):
Students who wish to enroll in the CPM program must meet a payroll experience prerequisite to register.  To satisfy this prerequisite, the student must have at least two years of experience being responsible for an organization's payroll function, which includes being accountable to management for the accuracy of employees' pay and all government statutory remittances, or equivalent experience, obtained in the past five years.  The PEPA is found on the CPA's website, www.payroll.ca, under Certification.  Students must submit the PEPA and receive approval from the CPA prior to enrolling in Introduction to Payroll Management.
**There is a pre-requisite for HRMT3328 and ORGB1135 which is waived for payroll students.  Please contact Debbie Homeniek to determine if you are eligible to waive the pre-requisite.

My opinion: I can't get in because I need weighted payroll experience.  This seems advanced for me.  I should go into the courses of Bookkeeping 1 and 2.
