This makes me mad

30 years too long: Demand justice for Bhopal survivors

Dear Tracy,

This makes me mad.

Imagine if your family was ripped apart by an industrial disaster that should have been prevented. Even worse - imagine that those responsible evaded accountability for 30 years.

Thirty years ago today, one of the world's worst industrial disasters wreaked havoc on the people of Bhopal, India. And they still haven't gotten justice.

Amnesty International continues to fight for accountability and for justice. They refuse to let time erase the Bhopal disaster.

Make your first donation to Amnesty and help support our efforts to hold companies accountable and advocate for the human rights of survivors. Until December 31st your donation will be matched dollar for dollar.

Plus, when you make a donation of $50 or more, we'll send you an Amnesty t-shirt you so you can start a conversation about human rights wherever you go.

On that dreadful night, a toxic gas containing deadly chemicals leaked from a storage tank at the Union Carbide pesticide plant in the center of town, choking and suffocating victims. Many lived in the densely populated slum areas surrounding the factory.

Rampyari Bai's daughter-in-law and unborn grandchild died after being exposed to the gas - along with up to 10,000 other people in just three days.

Hundreds of thousands of people are still suffering today. Rampyari has struggled with cancer. Youth activist Safreen Khan's father has serious heart problems and her mother has difficulties with her eyesight. She reports that many of her friends were born with deformities.

I met these activists while filming A Prayer for Rain, a movie that aims to show the horrors of the disaster and its aftermath.

I'm committed to making sure that Dow Chemical, Union Carbide's parent company, accepts its responsibility toward the survivors, who have a right to adequate compensation, medical care and a clean and healthy environment.

Please join me. Make a donation to support Amnesty's efforts calling for accountability. Until December 31st your donation will go twice as far.
