Help release Canadian journalist Mohamed Fahmy from wrongful detention in Egypt!
Dear Tracy,
Journalists play a vital role in uncovering and sharing news with the public. But this often puts their lives at risk. This is one of the reasons why we celebrate World Press Freedom Day on May 3rd: to protect journalists and bloggers who have commited no crime but to report the news. Canadian journalist Mohamed Fahmy was detained by Egyptian authorities last December, along with his Al Jazeera colleagues Baher Mohamed and Peter Greste.
All three men remain in prison and face terrorism-related charges for ‘airing misleading news’ about Egypt’s political situation.
Amnesty International considers all three men to be prisoners of conscience, imprisoned solely for the peaceful exercise of their right to free expression - and is demanding their immediate and unconditional release.
These
latest arrests come as part of a widespread crackdown on press freedom
in Egypt. Since July last year, a number of journalists have faced
arrest for reporting on human rights violations carried out by security
forces.
Please call on the Egyptian authorities to release Mohamed Fahmy and his colleagues immediately and unconditionally.
Sincerely,
Alex Neve
