Career Connections/ Youth Ventures/ Kippt.com

Mar. 30: I found these brochures I kept.  I think it was from one of those job fairs at the University of Alberta I attended.

Career Connections:  It's about careers in insurance.  It's actually pretty good with these career quizzes.  First you pick if you are a high school student, post secondary student, or a career changer.  Second you pick Sales and Marketing, Research and Analysis, Investigations and Problem Solving, and Risk Management and Development Strategies.

Then the quiz is 5 questions and they will tell you if you are more of a loss control specialist, underwriter, or a risk manager.

McMan Youth and Family Services:   This is a group home that opened way back in 1975.  It helps kids, teenagers, foster care, group care, family intervention, people with disabilities.  Here's the website you can check out and donate money to:

http://www.mcman.ca/

Working in Canada: I found this business card I think I got back in 2008.  I typed in www.labourmarketinformation.ca and it lead me to this instead:

http://www.workingincanada.gc.ca/home-eng.do?lang=eng

This is pretty good and informative website.  There is "Explore Careers", "Employers", and "Job Market Trends".

Public Service Commission of Canada: Here's another business card from 2008.  I type in http://jobs.gc.ca and it leads me to this:

http://jobs-emplois.gc.ca/centres/career-carriere/car-exp-eng.htm

This is about careers in the federal public service.

Service Canada:
I typed into servicecanada.gc.ca.  There is a link to help you find a job, but there are lots of other things like applying for EI and the CPP.

Youth Ventures: This is funded by the Government of Canada's Youth Employment Strategy.  The website says it gives career coaching and sessions.  There are training programs, and career and employment workshops.  There is a class called "Planning for school/ training; buyer beware" about preparing to go back to school.   It says all the workshops are free.

I think all of you should check it out if you're looking for a job or career.

EC Foundation: I found this piece of paper I clipped out because of this cute owl graphic.  It's for Edmonton Community Foundation.  It says: "...works with donors and the community to transform individual dreams of helping others into reality, now and forever, through permanent endowment funds."

You can make a donation or get a scholarship from them.  Charities, grant seekers, students, and professional advisors use this site.

Mar. 31 Easter weekend: Today was so busy at the restaurant because it was Easter Sunday.  In total, we had 12 people working at the restaurant so we can keep afloat.  It was really good teamwork.  I worked Good Friday, Sat, and today and it was busy the entire time.

Here is a tip for eating out at restaurants: If you want good service, go to a restaurant on Mon.-Thurs. night when it's not so busy.  When it's during the week, the servers will pay more attention to you and won't be so rushed.

Apr. 1 Kippt.com: I cut this out from the National Post business section.  This website is: "Build your online library of amazing things: Use Kippt to collect research, stories, inspiration and notes."

"We all love reading about new things. We also like to remember what we read and use information to build our knowledge. However the workflow of finding, reading, storing, searching and sharing information on the web seems broken to us. It's very random and scattered to many places.

Kippt grew from that frustration. We want to make your information workflow and archiving effortless."

Blog: This website is so cool.  I'm going to bookmark it.  However, my blog is like that.  I want to remember what I read and learned so I put it on my blog.  It's not as organized as Kippt.  One email is about business like this one and it has everything that's business related from careers, jobs, job interviews, etc.

In the top left corner there's a search engine on the blog.  I use it to see if I had written about something before.

Pinterest: Now that made me think about Pinterest.  It's where you can collect all these pictures of a theme.  Like one could be about cupcakes.  lol.

Cream.hr: I also got this from the National Post.  This website is about Human Resources and employment assessment.  If you use it, it can reduce turnover.

Investment consultant: I was going through my business cards and I see I have two from investment consultant.  They inform clients about investments.  A broker does trades and investments for a client.

BC film industry:
There's a little overlap here.  This could fit into my business email because I found this in the Edmonton Journal business section.  This could fit into my writing email because there was a similar article the Globe and Mail Life and Arts section.  Here's the article "BC film industry jobs head east" by Camille Bains.  It was in the Journal on Jan.18, 2013.

There isn't much being filmed in BC because "higher tax rebates lure productions to competitors in Ontario and Quebec."

"Premier Christy Clark said the govt. shells out $285 million in tax credits to the film industry and more money won't be available as the province to balance it's budget."

It mentioned that customers in California likes to do business with BC because it's the same time zone.  I never thought of that before.

Apr. 5 Wal-mart: I've read that Wal-Mart opened hundreds of stores, but they are very low on staff.  The lines are huge and customers who come in to buy stuff, find out that the items they want aren't there.  So they leave.  Looks like this store imploded on it's own.

Apr. 8 Jasper Ave: This was a few months back, but I read an article in the Edmonton Journal about the construction on Jasper Ave.  It slows down the traffic in downtown and there is like this big maze to walk through to get to buildings.  I know, I've been walking there a couple of times for job interviews.
