Your help is urgently needed: Yahya Jammeh, the President of The Gambia (pictured), has sworn to execute all prisoners on death row by mid-September!

Nine prisoners have already been executed - by firing squad, no less - on August 23. He's serious about killing them all.
The death penalty in The Gambia is often used to punish "treason" as a tool for quashing political dissent. International standards on fair trials, including presumption of innocence, access to lawyers and avenues for appeals are often not respected. Some of those now facing execution were subjected to torture and other ill-treatment to force confessions.

Sincerely,

Alex Neve
Secretary General

P.S. The death penalty hasn't been used in The Gambia since 1985, and it is outrageous that they have started again. Amnesty International is opposed to the death penalty in all cases as a violation of the right to life, and the ultimate cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment.
