job interviews/ "A truck driver's quiet kindness on the highway leads to gratitude and recognition"/ J Mack Slaughter Jr gets his family's breakfast paid by a stranger

Apr. 15, 2024: I was going through my notes, and I found out that I didn't write about this.

Mrs. Fields/ Pretzel Maker: I attended this interview in Jun. 2019.

I attended a job interview before in Dec. 2018.

This is in West Edmonton mall, and I can write the company name because it closed down, and I'm not writing anything negative about them.

Pros:

1. 1 hr and 1 bus ride to get there.

2. The hrs are 3:30-9pm.

9am-4pm.

3. The staff discount is 10% off when working and not working.

4. Baking pretzels and cookies

Cons: none.

My opinion: I would work here.  The place closed down in like early 2020.

Suzy Shier: I attended this interview at WEM in Oct. 2020.

Pros:

1. 1 hr bus ride.

2. The hours are the latest 9pm.  15 min. to close.

The pay is $15/hr.  2 or 3 shifts a week. No commission.

3. The duties are selling, cleaning, customer service.

Cons: none.

My opinion: I would work here.

This was in Jul. 2024.

Nov.10, 2024 The K- Days Food Stand job interview: This was on Kijiji.

Pros:

1. The location at the Expo Centre is easy to get to.

2. The pay is $15/hr.  They pay by e-transfer.

3. This job is temporary like 10 days of K- Days.

4. The duties there are 3 stands.

There is a Watermelon Burger- a burger with watermelon slices as the bread.  $19.

There are fruit drinks like drink right out from the watermelon and pineapple. $17.

There is whipped lemonade.

5. The discount is you can drink all the juice for free.  The burger would be half- price.

6. The training would be for 3 hrs on that Fri.

Cons:

1. I can see this can get very busy.

2. This can also get hot outside.

My opinion: I would work there if I got hired.  This was a group job interview and there were 13 of us.  The boss told us to fill out the online application and a lot did on their smart phones.

I borrowed this 50 something yr old white woman's phone to fill out the application.  She told me it was hard for her to get a job at fast food places.

I didn't get hired, and that's ok.  I did go to K- Days by myself and checked out the stands.

Nov. 12, 2024 A Delivery Company dispatcher: This was on Kijiji.

Pros:

1. The hours are Mon. - Fri. 9am-5pm.

2. The pay is $16/hr.

3. After you're trained, you can work from home.

4. I would be a dispatcher.  There are 6 drivers.

I would direct them to go where.

There are 60-70 customers.  They're mainly real estate lawyers and pick- up and deliver things.

Cons:

1. I would be training at his home office at first.  I would take 2 buses and an LRT to get there.

2. This seems like a really hard job.  This can get very busy like Fridays, the end of the month, and the hours that are busiest are 10am- 2pm.

My opinion: I wouldn't work there, because it's too hard.

Nov. 13, 2024 Thai restaurant: I applied on Indeed.

Pros:

1. The hours are 3-4 days a week.

12-5pm or 12-8pm.

There are Fri., Sat., Sun. nights that are 4 or 5pm-9pm at night.

2. The pay is $15-17/hr.  I would start at $15.

3. I would be in food prep: cutting veggies and chicken.  I would wash dishes.

4. The discount is if I work 8 hrs shift: a free meal.

4-5 hrs shifts is 50% off meal.  There would be a 15 min. break.

5. It was 1 bus to get there.

Cons:

1. I don't really like to work at night.  We close at 9pm and I may be out by 9:30pm.  I did check the bus schedules.

My opinion: I would work there if I got hired.

This is in Aug. 2024.

Nov. 16, 2024 The Japanese Fast Food Place: This was on Job Bank.

I attended a job interview here last year.

The corporate office was 3 buses to get to.  The first time I went there, I took 2 buses and then a taxi because I wasn't familiar with the 3rd bus.

This time, I took 3 buses to get there.

Pros:

1. There were a lot of locations like in downtown where I can get to.

2. The pay is $15/hr with tips.

3. The job is a kitchen helper/ food counter attendant.  I can do the food prep, cleaning, and taking orders.

Cons:

1. You have to stay really late.  The shifts are from 5pm-12am or 6pm- 1am.  I don't want to take the bus that late at night.

My opinion: If I didn't have to stay that late, I would work there.

Grand Villa Casino: They gave this "Employer Spotlight" at the Bredin Centre.

They are part of the Gateway Casinos and Entertainment Ltd.

They're hiring for:

Servers

Porters/ bussers

You are required to get a Pro Serve: If you work for 6 months or 460 hrs, you will be reimbursed for the Pro Serve cost.

Guest Services: You are promoting the casino.

The Cage: This is where you give cash.

There is a anti- money laundering certificate.

This is in Sept. 2024:

Dec. 15, 2024 The African restaurant: This was a cook position.  This was on Kijiji.

Pros:

1. This was in downtown.

2. The pay is $17/ hr.  There could be tips.

3. This is part- time like 2 or 3 days a week.

4. I can do the job of food prep.

Cons:

1. This is a new restaurant and 60% of new restaurants close down within the first 2 years.

2. I have to work until 12am.

3. The job may be too hard like there is a lot of making food from scratch.

There is 1 cook and 1 kitchen helper.

The Videogame and Hobby Store: This was on Kijiji.

Pros:

1. It was 2 buses to get to.

2. The pay is $15-16/hr.  $1 raise after 3 months.

3. This is part- time like 15-30 hrs/ week.

4. The hours are good like it doesn't close too late like 7 or 8pm.  This is evenings and weekends.

5. The duties are selling, cleaning like vacuuming.

People come in and sell their consoles, so you have to test the consoles before you sell them at the store.

They said if I don't get hired here, I was willing to work at this other mall that's closer by.

Cons:

1. This is a mild con: I'm not that interested in selling the products.

My opinion: I would work here if I got hired.

The Antique Store: This was on Kijiji.

Pros:

1. It was 2 buses to get to.

2. This is part- time like 3 days a week.

3. The duties are to sell the jewelry, clothes, and furniture.

4. At least 2 people work here at a time, so there's always someone to help you.

Cons:

1. This is a mild con: this might be hard to sell.

My opinion: I would work there if I got hired.

Dec. 31, 2024 "Céline Dion Thanks Fans for 'Unwavering Support' as She Looks Forward to 'Endless Possibilities' in 2025": Today I found this article by Daniela Avila on People and Yahoo:

"If I would have just stayed secretly behind, my home would have become a prison, and I would have become a prisoner of my own life," she added.

"Today, I live one day at a time. The fact that I found the strength to communicate my condition with the world makes me very proud.

Maybe my purpose in this life is to help others, and that is the greatest gift."

Dec. 27, 2024 "A truck driver's quiet kindness on the highway leads to gratitude and recognition": Today I found this article on CBC and Yahoo:

When trucker Daljit Sohi spotted a woman drop her purse in a B.C. parking lot, he immediately stepped in to help.

What followed was a three-hour drive to return her belongings, a gesture that would later earn him a generous gift and nomination for a prestigious trucking award.

Sohi, 34, who lives in Calgary, drives for Triple Eight Transport, an Abbotsford-based trucking company specializing in long-haul routes across Western Canada.

On Nov. 29, during a trip from Calgary to Abbotsford, Sohi made a brief coffee stop in Golden, a town in B.C.'s Kootenay region. As he headed back to his truck, he said he noticed a woman drop her purse and drive off before he could catch her attention.

Speaking to CBC News in Punjabi, Sohi explained that he picked up the purse, hoping to find a phone inside, but instead discovered "money, IDs, documents, and a gold chain."

Without a way to make any contact, Sohi decided to follow her, hoping to return the purse.

"I didn't even take a washroom break," he said.

The woman, Shailly James from High River, Alta., was driving to Salmon Arm to visit family.

Initially, she said she was unaware of the situation and grew concerned after noticing a truck following her.

Shailly James said she was determined not to let Sohi's kind gesture go unrewarded. She managed to note the number of his trailer and was then able to contact Sohi's employer.

"I was like, why is he following me? He also tried flashing his lights," she recalled.

When she finally stopped at a gas station in Sicamous, Sohi approached her and returned the purse. Overwhelmed with gratitude, James offered him a $500 cash reward, but he declined.

"I asked his name, but he didn't tell me," James said.

Not ready to let the gesture go unacknowledged, she tracked him down using the trailer number on his truck. It took several days and multiple calls, but James said she eventually reached Triple Eight Transport.

She said she sent Sohi an iPhone and a note to express her gratitude.

"Everybody was so happy about what Daljit had done," said Palwinder Singh, the safety and compliance supervisor at Triple Eight Transport.

Sohi, who has been with the company since 2021, hadn't told anyone at work about what happened, not even his family.

Jan. 3, 2024: I found this on Facebook:

J Mack Slaughter Jr gets his family's breakfast paid by a stranger: I am Facebook friends with him.  He was an actor on the sitcom Like Family and now he's a doctor:

Well, I just full on cried in public after a complete stranger paid for my entire family’s NOT cheap breakfast 🤯🥹 Here’s what the receipt said:
Thank you for being a great dad.
From a dad to a dad. Thank you for being the dad they need you to be regardless of who’s watching. We need more men like you. Thank you for letting us all see your love for them all.
From,
A retired Army medic
Man, this hit me right in the feels!! Random acts of kindness are SO POWERFUL!!! My entire day is changed, maybe my whole month?? I’m just so awesomely aware of the good that exists in complete strangers. Especially in the wake of what happened in NOLA, we need gifts like these more than ever ❤️‍🩹
Once I composed myself and explained to my kids why I was crying happy tears, my daughter asked me, “Dad, who should WE bless today!?” ❤️
I guess I’ll never know who did this or be able to thank them in person, but I promise to double down on being the best damn father I can possibly be. Parents, don’t you dare fake it, but I’m keeping my eye out for my chance to pay this forward 🫶
