New Amsterdam fans have something very exciting to look forward to: 

A sequel series to the medical drama is in the works! And it's set to follow a character they've already met.

Read on to find out everything that's been revealed about the project so far.

The New Amsterdam sequel will include a time-jump

New Amsterdam: Tomorrow, the current title for the in-development series, would take place 30 years after the events of the fifth and final season of New Amsterdam. 

The show ended in 2023, placing the sequel some time in the 2050s. 

Because of the time jump, viewers will be follow the grown-up version of Dr. Max Goodwin’s (Ryan Eggold) daughter, Luna Goodwin. Like her father, Luna will assume the role of Medical Director at New Amsterdam hospital.

This being the future, she will face a different set of challenges than her father, and Deadline reports that the new series will explore the ways 

Artificial Intelligence affects the medical industry. 

New Amsterdam: Tomorrow is being created by David Shulner, who also created and oversaw the original series.

The sequel was set up in the New Amsterdam series finale

If you watched New Amsterdam all the way to the end, you've already met adult Luna, played by Molly Griggs. However as of now, neither Eggold nor Griggs are attached to the project.

From what viewers have seen of the character, Luna is as enthusiastic and passionate as her father. In the series finale, she reflects on Max's lessons in a speech to her staff. 

“Over the course of the day I saw how hard he worked to save one life,” she says. 

“And how hard everybody worked, together. And that’s when I realized that New Amsterdam didn’t take my father away from me. This hospital gave me my father. Showed me who he was, who I could be. 

And that’s the day I realized I wanted to be just like him. It’s the day I realized I wanted to be a doctor. So I wanted to start by asking all of you the same thing my father asked his staff every hour of every single day: How can I help?” 

Young Luna was played on New Amsterdam by twins Nora and Opal Clow. She is the daughter of Max and Georgia Goodwin (Lisa O'Hare), who delivered her daughter in the back of an ambulance and only got to hold her for a moment before the vehicle was involved in a collision. Georgia died from her injuries shortly thereafter.

There are a few spinoff shows and pilots in contention for the 2025–2026 TV season. NBC has been extremely quiet about a lot of its shows, even the current ones, but one of the spinoffs we hope to see happen is the New Amsterdam spinoff series.

Tentatively titled New Amsterdam: Tomorrow, the series was set to follow Max’s grown-up daughter, Luna, who has followed in her father’s footsteps and turned to medicine. At the end of New Amsterdam season 5, we found out that she would one day become the new medical director, and she made a similar impact to her father in the series premiere.

Set 30 years after the series finale of the medical drama, there is also a chance to see how technology could change the medical world. 

This series is set to look at how artificial intelligence could change the way everything works in hospitals, 

but there are sure to be many of the same issues, 

such as the financial costs of medical care 

and the number of trained doctors and nurses in hospitals.

As of right now, there has been no decision made about the series. TVLine reported in its Inside Line that NBC has remained quiet about the decision, even when asked direct questions about it.

This means fans of the original medical drama will need to wait until the Upfronts, which are set to take place on Monday, May 12. This is when the full fall schedule will be announced and when trailers for freshman shows are released.

The announcement about the series could happen shortly before it. NBC tends to do some bulk decisions — both renewals and cancellations — on the Thursday or Friday before Upfronts, so we could get a lot of news at the end of the week.

While it’s concerning and disappointing that there’s a lack of news, there is a bit of a silver lining. It means that there is still a chance that the series will happen.

NBC is still to make decisions about the bulk of its shows. The One Chicago franchise finally landed renewals, but eyes are still on the Law & Order franchise, Found, Brilliant Minds, Grosse Pointe Garden Society, and much more.

We could see New Amsterdam: Tomorrow up against Brilliant Minds, as they are both quirky medical dramas. NBC will want to see if the spinoff series will hold up better in the linear ratings compared to Brilliant Minds, which did okay but not great in its fall 2024 slot.

The NBC Upfronts take place on Monday, May 12.

New Amsterdam: 

"A new medical director breaks the rules to heal the system at America's oldest public hospital."

Pros:

1. The lead character Dr. Max Goodwin (Ryan Eggold) is very likeable, inspirational, and he wants to change the hospital and help people.  He is kind of funny.  He has worked a lot from The Blacklist, and The Blacklist: Redemption.

Max's sister died in the hospital.

Tyler Labine as Dr. Iggy Frome, a psychologist.  He is a Canadian actor from the teen sitcom Breaker High.

2. Ethnic diversity.

4. There is good writing with a teen girl Gemma who moves from foster home to foster home.  Iggy finds her a home by giving Gemma's foster mom's daughter, Gemma's journal.  The journal has lots written about the foster mom.

Iggy: What do you want to happen?

My opinion: I like that line.

A Liberia teen boy is infected with something and is put into quarantine.

I learned about medicine.

5. There was good dialogue like Dr. Floyd Reynolds (Jocko Sims) why he decided to stop dating this woman because she's white.  He is black and he goes on about saying:

Floyd: I imagine marrying a black woman and having black kids.  When my mom and sisters seeing some black sports star marrying a white woman, they feel betrayed.

This is about race and it was controversial.

My opinion: 

Pro: This is his decision on who he wants to date, marry, and have kids with.

Con: So you're going to stop dating a woman who you like, and she likes you, and you get along because of something she can't control like her race? 

I disagree with his choice, but that's his life.

My opinion: The pilot was good, and then I never watched it again.  I don't really like medical dramas.
