"Accessory retailer Claire's to seek creditor protection in Canada but stores will stay open"/ "Bankrupt jewelry retailer Claire’s to sell its North American business"

Aug. 6, 2025 "Accessory retailer Claire's to seek creditor protection in Canada but stores will stay open": Today I found this article on CBC:

Claire's Holdings LLC says it has filed for bankruptcy protection in the U.S. and will soon follow suit in Canada.

The accessories and cosmetics retailer says it will make a filing with the Ontario Superior Court under the Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act.

Claire's stores in North America will remain open as it embarks on the process, which it says will help monetize its assets and allow it to explore strategic alternatives for the business.

Claire's CEO Chris Cramer positioned the decision to file for creditor protection as difficult but necessary.

He says the company made the move because of

increased competition,

consumer spending trends

and the ongoing shift away from brick-and-mortar retail.

Claire's was founded in 1974 and has more than 2,750 Claire's stores in 17 countries throughout North America and Europe.

It is known for selling jewelry, cosmetics, accessories to girls between the ages of three and 18, and for its ear-piercing services geared toward teens.

My opinion: There are lot of jewelry stores and clothing stores that also sell jewelry.

Aug. 20, 2025 "Bankrupt jewelry retailer Claire’s to sell its North American business": Today I found this article on BNN Bloomberg:

Jewelry retailer Claire’s said on Wednesday it would sell its North American business to private equity firm Ames Watson for US$104 million in cash,

in a deal that will keep at least 795 retail locations in business.

The sale agreement will “allow the Claire’s brand to remain a prominent retailer for teens, tweens, and young girls around the world,” Claire’s said in a court document filed on Wednesday.

Ames Watson, a private holding company that owns athletic apparel brands including Champion Teamwear and Lids,

is acquiring Claire’s brand and up to 950 Claire’s stores,

according to court documents.

Claire’s has halted “going out of business sales” at all stores that could be sold, but it will continue liquidation sales at other locations.

Claire’s, which sells earrings and fashion accessories for teens and young girls, filed for bankruptcy in Delaware earlier this month with more than US$690 million in debt.

The company, which previously filed for bankruptcy in 2018,

operates more than 2,300 stores across 17 countries in North America and Europe.

Ames Watson co-founder Lawrence Berger said in a statement that the firm was “committed to investing in its (Claire’s) future by preserving a significant retail footprint across North America.”

Ames Watson will also provide noncash considerations as part of the sale, such as

taking on liabilities owed to Claire’s vendors and landlords,

continuing to employ current retail staff at acquired Claire’s stores,

and extending US$36 million in credit that the bankrupt company can use to address some of its pre-existing debt.

Claire’s will seek approval of the sale on Thursday at a court hearing in Wilmington, Delaware.

Claire’s has suffered in recent years from

increased competition,

high rent costs,

and new tariffs on imports from supplier nations such as China, Thailand and Vietnam.

Sun. Jul. 24, 2025 Job interview: I attended one in the afternoon in downtown.

Yard sale: I took the bus home and I saw a yard with a table and all these things out.  I immediately got off the bus and went there.

It was mainly kid's toys, stuffed animals, dolls, puzzles, board games.  There was Pokémon and Star Wars

My little brother P likes Pokémon and Star Wars, but he has a lot of these things already.

Garage sale: On the way to the interview, I did see a sign for this.

I then got this for free because the woman had a free section:

1. A Christmas tin can from Dollarama.  A snowman and there are 2 boxes of presents.

2. A Christmas tin can that held chocolate pecans.  There are 3 dogs and they're sitting on boxes of presents.  "Be Merry."

I can put things in these cans, and put them up as Christmas decorations.

I have 2 other Christmas tin cans from Dollarama I got for free.

1 from the Hotel Restaurant job that stored cookies given to us.

1 from the Community League that had candy.  Trevor didn't want the tin can.

1 box with Santa Claus from Dollarama. This was from the Soup Place #2 and was going to be recycled.

3. A beautiful hand -painted pink rose.  The words "Oh Come Let Us Adore Him.  -Natalie"

The woman who held the garage sale: "My son's wife painted this."

I'm going to put this up downstairs.

"Hudson’s Bay wants to sell leases to billionaire to appease lender, landlords say"/ "Hudson’s Bay battle over sale of leases to B.C. billionaire underway at Toronto court"

Aug. 26, 2025 "Hudson’s Bay wants to sell leases to billionaire to appease lender, landlords say": Today I found this article by Tara Deschamps on BNN Bloomberg:

A group of Hudson’s Bay landlords say a lender’s desire to recoup cash is the only reason the shuttered department store is pursuing a plan to sell its leases to a B.C. billionaire.

In new court documents filed late Monday, the landlords say the retailer is keen to make a sale of 25 leases to Ruby Liu happen because of Pathlight Capital LP.

The group of landlords, including Cadillac Fairview and Oxford Properties, point out that Pathlight is the only creditor in favour of the sale and posits that its support stems from the lender wanting its share of Liu’s $69.1-million offer.

“All HBC seeks to do here is squeeze out more money for Pathlight,” the landlords say in their joint filing.

When the Bay filed for creditor protection in March, court records show

Pathlight was owed more than $95 million.

The sum was a fraction of the roughly $1 billion owed to all of the retailer’s creditors.

To chip away at its debt, the Bay liquidated and closed all of its stores and then began selling off its leases.

Five were sold to YM Inc., which owns a slew of mall brands including Bluenotes, Urban Planet, Suzy Shier and West 49, for $5.03 million.

Ivanhoe Realities picked up the lease for Metrotown in Burnaby, B.C., for $20,000.

Liu, who owns three B.C. malls and a golf course, wanted 28 of the leases to open a new department store named after herself. The sale of the first three leases for $6 million was quickly approved because they covered properties at malls she owns, but the remaining 25 she wants have become a hotly contested matter.

Landlords, which also include KingSett Capital, Morguard and Primaris, are opposed to Liu taking over their leases because they say her plans to open entertainment and dining spaces within the department store she’s designing for their properties are not allowed under the leases.

The landlords also say she doesn’t have enough expertise to launch a new department store and charge that the project’s budget and timelines are unrealistic. They estimate she will need millions more to overhaul properties and believe the time she has allocated to the renovations, hiring staff and developing a new brand is insufficient.

“She will fail before she opens a store.

By that time Pathlight will be gone,

and the landlords will be left with the pieces,

unable to obtain any relief against the shell PurchaserCo,”

the landlords say in court documents referencing Liu.

The documents were filed days before another lender, ReStore Capital, is expected in court to ask a judge to reject the Liu deal.

Pathlight said in a factum filed late Monday that ReStore’s motion is “senseless” and “a thinly disguised attempt to recover their indebtedness ahead of others.”

The Bay and Liu have argued against ReStore’s motion, saying she has what it takes to develop a department store and is willing to pour more money than budgeted into the venture, if renovation and launch costs rise beyond her initial estimates.

They say landlords are only opposing the deal because they’d much rather the leases be disclaimed,

so they can develop them into commercial, residential and mixed-use sites.

When leases are disclaimed,

they are turned back over to landlords,

who have the freedom to choose who moves into their properties.

The landlords charge that any idea that are opposing Liu to get their leases back and then, a windfall, is “wrong.”

“The only party seeking a windfall is Pathlight,

which seeks to shift its potential losses to the landlords,”

the landlords say.

They allege Pathlight is the only creditor which will gain from Liu getting the leases

and point out that the company has a continuing relationship with the Bay’s U.S. business, which includes Saks U.S. and Neiman Marcus.

They also claim the Bay has repeatedly followed Pathlight’s direction

They say the landlords are the largest creditor group in the Bay’s creditor protection proceedings and will suffer hundreds of millions of dollars more in losses if the Liu lease deal is approved.

Some of the leases they say Liu wants date back to early 1972 and came with low rent in return for an anchor tenant that had a national brand and guaranteed limited uses for their space.

The Bay “seeks to forcibly flip that bargain on its head.”

“The landlords would be forced into business with a new company with

no real assets,

no infrastructure,

no brand recognition,

and no department store experience

— run by a person who has no retail experience,

undisclosed liabilities

and who holds all assets through a complicated web of overseas holdings.”

the landlords say.

“All of this, not to further a restructuring,

but to pay a sole secured creditor.”

Aug. 28, 2025 "Hudson’s Bay battle over sale of leases to B.C. billionaire underway at Toronto court": Today I found this article by Tara Deschamps on BNN Bloomberg:

TORONTO — A showdown between Hudson’s Bay and a group of landlords opposing the retailer’s push to sell about two dozen of its leases to a B.C. billionaire got underway in court today.

The battle has been simmering ever since the Bay announced in May that it had selected Ruby Liu to buy 28 of its leases.

Three in malls she owns were already transferred to Liu, but landlords are fighting the sale of 25 more, saying the timelines and budget in her business plan are insufficient for her to develop a new department store.

A lawyer for the Bay kicked off today’s hearing by arguing that the landlord’s objections are misguided and that Liu is a tenant with a fresh slate.

The lawyer says Liu not only has

zero debt, unlike the Bay,

but has significant capital

and will easily be able to get more.

She says Liu has also committed to paying a year of rent upfront, which was something the Bay never provided.
