Apr. 2, 2022 "Money and marriage: Tips for understanding how finances can affect relationships": by Lana Sanichar on Costco Connection. I like this picture:
According to the article “Top 6 Marriage-Killing Money Issues” on Investopedia.com, financial problems are the leading cause of divorce.
I decided to check in with my spouse to see what he thought were the most important points to consider in order to keep our marriage happy yet financially fit. Here’s what he said:
Common goals. “We never had many money conversations before marriage, but shortly after it became apparent that they would be necessary. We began chatting about our common goals. They included mortgage-free home ownership, having two children and eventually travelling.
By creating these common goals, we knew that we would have to set aside X number of dollars on a monthly basis.
We discovered that clearing up any debt, whether shared or not, would be important to achieve those goals as soon as we could.”
Compromise. “Nearing retirement and almost empty nesters, my wife wants to begin a major renovation to our home, but I want to downsize to a property where there is less upkeep and I can spend more time doing the things that interest me and us.
To compromise, we are staying in our current home and updating it, keeping in mind that we will downsize upon retirement to begin enjoying post-working life the way we want to.
Compromising allowed us to both be satisfied with the financial decision and even excited about the upcoming updates to our home.”
Financial priorities. “My wife is a scuba diver and almost always travels alone or with friends to destinations where she can swim with a whale shark or two. I prefer to stay on land. I have to keep in mind that being in and around the water is very important to her, even if it isn’t to me. And likewise, she encourages my obsession for cars. We are both happy and understand that not all our goals are shared.”
Communication and openness are key when tackling the topic of money in marriage.
My spouse and I schedule a money date night once a month, when discussions surrounding
short-term spending needs,
shared financial goals
and financial priorities take place.
These discussions have removed the fear, anxiety and shame sometimes associated with money.
Talking about it
When money is a regular conversation, partners can begin to understand the role it plays in their lives and their relationship. My husband was raised in a more fiscally conservative household, whereas my parents were a little more financially free-spirited. It became important that we continually had money discussions so that we understood where the other one was coming from when a statement or decision regarding money was made, in order to spare hurt or angry feelings.—LS

Nov. 22, 2022 "How stay-at-home spouses can build credit": Today I found this article by Sara Rathner on BNN Bloomberg:
Spouses share a lot, but no matter your relationship status, your credit score belongs to you and you alone.
Even if you’re 100 per cent supported financially by your spouse or partner, establishing and building your own credit score is essential.
It can benefit you both as you navigate financial decisions together.
But should you divorce or your spouse pass away, having good or excellent credit can help you as you begin to make financial decisions on your own.
Besides, maintaining some money independence can keep you both on equal footing in your relationship.
“A household’s financial dependence on one income earner can foster unhealthy relationship control dynamics,” said Katherine Fox, a certified financial planner, founder and advisor at Sunnybranch Wealth in Portland, Oregon, in an email.
“Stay-at-home spouses who take steps to protect their credit score and financial literacy are doing their part to maintain a healthy money attitude and dynamic within their relationship.”
WHY YOUR CREDIT SCORE IS EQUALLY IMPORTANT
Any time you and your spouse apply for a joint loan, like a mortgage, both of your credit scores get evaluated by the lender.
Lenders may use the person’s score that falls on the lower end to determine your eligibility.
Ideally, even the lowest score between you both is still in good shape because this can affect what loan terms, like interest rates, you’d qualify for together.
A lower credit score can make borrowing money more expensive.
Your credit score also comes into play when you apply for a credit card in your own name, which you can do even if you don’t earn an income. So long as you’re 21 or older, you can include your spouse’s income on the card application.
Moreover, unexpectedly becoming single again is the most difficult reason nonworking spouses need to build their credit.
“Having a solid foundation will help you if you end up alone and need capital to get started,” says Brittany Davis, a Memphis, Tennessee-based accredited financial counselor who is an associate financial planner for Brunch & Budget, a registered investment advisor.
“I know some people are leery of credit and debt, but there are so many things credit can be used for.”
Davis likens credit access to insurance — it’s something that’s good to have, whether or not you need it at the moment.
WAYS TO BUILD CREDIT WITHOUT AN INCOME
Besides applying for your own credit card using your spouse’s income in your application, there are other ways to build your credit.
You can become an authorized user on your spouse’s credit card. They’d be responsible for making payments, but if they pay on time each month and you both avoid charging more than 30 per cent of the credit limit, over time this can build your credit score.
Applying for loans under both of your names, like an auto loan or mortgage, can also be helpful as on-time payments will be reflected on both of your credit reports.
“At the very least, stay-at-home spouses should be a joint account holder or added to their partner’s credit card to help them build and maintain their own credit score,” Fox says.
Be sure to also pay other household bills on time, including utility bills and rent payments. In some cases, those are also reported to credit bureaus.
HOW YOU CAN AFFECT EACH OTHER’S CREDIT SCORES
Though you each have your own credit scores,
your money habits can help
or hurt each other,
particularly when you have joint loans or share credit cards.
As a credit card authorized user, you’re at the mercy of the primary cardholder’s behaviors.
If your spouse makes late payments, that can negatively impact your credit.
You’ll want to set a budget with each other,
because when more than one person uses the same card,
it’s that much easier to overspend.
Becoming an authorized user is an exercise in trust and communication.
Where you live can also be a factor in how you can each affect each other.
According to Fox, in community property states,
you’re generally not responsible for any debts your spouse took on before you got married,
but you’re responsible for each other’s debts after marriage.
But in non-community property states, you only share responsibility for joint accounts and debts.
And if you’re the income earner, proceed with caution before co-signing a loan for your nonworking spouse or any other loved one. It’s not like a joint loan, where both parties share the burden of debt payments but can also share ownership of an asset.
“Co-signing is more of a risk in my eyes because you have no secured interest in that item you’re co-signing a loan for,” Davis says.
“If that person fails to make payments, you become responsible for the loan, but you don’t have an interest as an owner.”

Sept. 1, 2023 "Ruby Franke: '8 Passengers' parenting mum arrested on child abuse suspicion": Today I found this article by Madeline Halpert on Yahoo:
A Utah woman who ran a popular parenting advice YouTube channel has been arrested on suspicion of child abuse after her malnourished son escaped from home, officials said.
Ruby Franke and her business partner Jodi Nan Hildebrandt were arrested in Ivins, Utah on Wednesday.
Officials also found Ms Franke's 10-year-old daughter in a malnourished condition at her partner's house.
Ms Franke and her business partner face two felony counts of child abuse.
The BBC has reached out to Ms Franke and Ms Hildebrandt for comment.
Police say Ms Franke's 12-year-old son climbed out of the window and ran to a neighbour's house to ask for food and water.
The vlogger has faced a backlash in the past for her strict parenting measures described on the channel, including her son claiming he slept on a bean bag for several months as punishment and Ms Franke describing withholding meals as another disciplinary measure.

"A Toronto real-estate agent was 'shaken' after she said a restaurant served her a literal can of tuna and potato chips for $25 Canadian dollars": Today I found this article by Geoff Weiss on Yahoo:
A Toronto real-estate agent seeking a light bite said her waitress suggested a dish akin to tuna tartare or crudo.
She was aghast when a $25 CAD plate comprising a can of tuna fish and potato chips arrived.
TikTok sleuths suspected two beloved local businesses were behind it, but both told Insider the dish wasn't theirs.
A Toronto real-estate agent seeking a light bite between showings was "shaken" after she said a local restaurant served her a literal can of tuna fish on a plate with potato chips. The dish apparently cost 25 Canadian dollars.
"Is inflation that bad?" Sophie Bokelmann says in a TikTok video she posted on Monday, which has now garnered 1.1 million views.
Bokelmann, who declined to reveal the name of the local business to Insider as she didn't "want to be associated with slandering a restaurant," said she didn't even look at the menu, but the waitress recommended something she claimed was similar to tuna tartare or crudo.
What arrived was shocking: "A can of tuna — they didn't even take the tuna out of the can," she recalled in her viral video. The canned fish was dusted with a green onion garnish and served with chips. "Twenty-five f---ing dollars," Bokelmann said, which is roughly $18.50 in the US.
"I'm not the person who would ever send something back, but I was like, 'This is so gross'," she told Insider. She added that the waitress was understanding and brought her a side of bread instead.
Viewers were outraged on Bokelmann's behalf, with many quipping that the platter seemed emblematic of the ubiquitous "girl dinner" trend.
"The green onion sprinkled on it sends me," one said.
Another added, "$25 FOR FANCY FEAST AND LAYS!??!!??!!? 😭😭😭"
Torontonians in the comments feverishly tried to track down the culprit, with many suspecting it was Bar Raval or Bar Isabel – two highly-regarded local haunts. Bokelmann was adamant it was neither business. She wanted to clear both of their names to not get barred by either of the restaurants, which she said were among her favorites in the city.
Alessandro Pietropaolo, a partner at Bar Isabel, told Insider that while "lots of restaurants are serving conservas right now," or tinned seafood that is made in-house or imported from Spain, Bar Isabel doesn't "serve any of them in the tin." Bar Raval also has preserved fish on its menu, but a rep also denied any involvement.
To be fair, tinned seafood and potato chips is a pairing that is "not uncommon" in Spain, per a 2020 article from Eater. The combo has even been touted by illustrious chefs like José Andrés.

My opinion: I was shocked and surprised that a restaurant would serve this.
1. It's like no one put any time or effort in putting this meal together. If you put a salad together, there's time and effort in that.
2. There is no cooking skills put in this. I and a lot of people can put this together by opening a can of food and a bag of chips.
3. I might as well be cooking and eating this meal at home.
4. You might as well eat at a fast food place or some prepared food at the supermarket.
Sept. 4, 2023 "Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson and Oprah Winfrey face backlash for asking fans to donate to Maui fund instead of contributing more themselves": Today I found this article by Andrew Lloyd on Yahoo:
Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Oprah Winfrey launched a relief fund to help aid local residents who were affected by wildfires that ravaged large sections of Maui, Hawaii, but viewers hit back and asked why the celebrity duo couldn't donate more of their own millions, instead of appealing to people with less money.
On August 31, the pair posted a video to their millions of followers on Instagram in which Winfrey could be seen standing beside Johnson as they introduced the "People's Fund of Maui," which they said aimed to help raise money for local residents affected by the tragedy.
"Math ain't mathing with this one. You guy's literally have so much money…. You can donate it and make it back within a year," one top comment with over 10,000 likes read.
"I support Maui and the cause. But why are you asking us common folk who live paycheck to paycheck. We struggle to put food on table. Who helps us?" one top comment read.
According to Forbes, Winfrey has a net worth of $2.5 billion and owns at least 13 properties on the Hawaiian islands. Johnson, the world's highest-paid actor, is worth $270 million, the outlet reported.
On September 2, Winfrey posted a follow-up video with another lengthy caption on Instagram, where she thanked the "10,000 people who have personally donated" and said thousands of people who had been affected by the wildfires had signed up for assistance. She added, "We are working as quickly as we can to verify them and get the money delivered."

The audience gives her standing ovation.
The main point: Donate what you can afford. You have to take care of yourself and your family first.

Sept. 6, 2023 "Feds award $15 million contract to Sun Life to lay groundwork for dental care program": Today I found this article on BNN Bloomberg:
The federal government has awarded a contract worth up to $15 million to lay the groundwork for a new national dental insurance plan.
Procurement Minister Jean-Yves Duclos and Health Minister Mark Holland announced today the contract was awarded to Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada.
The federal government says this interim agreement will allow for the "timely launch and successful operation" of the plan, while details of the main contract are finalized.
The federal government is working to set up the new insurance plan to replace an interim benefit system that launched last year.
A national dental care program is a cornerstone of the supply-and-confidence agreement between the NDP and Liberals.
The spring budget promised $13 billion over the next five years to implement the national dental care plan, which the federal government says will insure up to nine million Canadians.

CAW is asking for a 46% increase in income with a 32 hour work week say goodbye to Canadian car industry and billions of tax payer subsidies.for useless EVs. A rural school district in the British Columbia Interior has filled a shortfall of teachers with help from an anonymous benefactor who donated $200,000 to welcome new educators.
At a time when schools across the province are struggling with staff recruitment and retention, the Gold Trail School District offered $10,000 incentives to attract new teachers, and $15,000 for those who agreed to move to the small town of Lytton which was devastated by fire two years ago.
Superintendent Teresa Downs says all 18 vacancies this year have been filled by the district, which manages eight small schools ranging in size from three to 350 pupils, with a total enrollment of 1,100. Thirteen new teachers qualified for the extra cash, and unused funds could go to future hires, Downs said.
Sept. 2, 2023 Ayfer's going- away party: She will be going away for a year for work. I know her from the Personality Meetup group. There were about 30 people there. I met some new people.
This was in the backyard. There was warm weather and no smoke. I was there from 5:40pm- 10:20 pm. My parents drove me there and picked me up.
I brought a bag of BBQ chips. The others bought salad, potato salad, macaroni salad, pizza, rice, and they barbecue some chicken.
There was a chocolate cake, a vanilla cake, a small black forest cake, a small gluten free chocolate cake, a small strawberry shortcake, and a Japanese cheesecake.
There was a small outdoor fireplace that you can move. There are colored glass stones on it.
The garden had lots of flowers and decorations.

Magic, Healing and Manifestation: Freedom Beyond Expectations to Achieve Your Wildest Dreams. A free online event series for women of color: I have been listening to this for the past week. I also post the videos on my Facebook page.
If you're a woman, you will like this. This is hosted by Nicki Hu:
"Do you feel like you are meant for so much more than what society, culture, and family says your life and success is supposed to be?
For generations, women of color have adhered to social and cultural expectations because we are told that checking off a list of things and fitting into a box was the only way we were considered successful.
However, some of these ancient views and expectations have kept us feeling restricted, shamed, and unworthy from pursuing what our heart truly desires.
That paradigm is rapidly changing as more women are finding their purpose, individuality, intuition, voice, pleasure, sovereignty, and healing to be the path of deep inner fulfillment and achieving their wildest dreams."
