Dear Tracy,
Thank you for demanding justice for Raif Badawi. Now I’m asking you to do just one more thing to defend freedom of expression in Saudi Arabia.
Raif Badawi is one of many activists caught up in the repressive Saudi monarchy's crackdown on freedom of expression. Hundreds of people have been imprisoned and silenced in the name of “security.” Raif’s lawyer, Waleed Abu al-Khair, is one of these people.
Just weeks before Raif's sentencing, Waleed was arrested. Three months later, he was sentenced to 15 years behind bars on charges related to his human rights activism. He is also a Prisoner of Conscience.
Waleed’s appeal hearing is scheduled for this Monday, January 12. There are pervasive fears that like Raif, he will be given an even harsher sentence on appeal - so it is critical to show the Saudi authorities that the world is watching. You can help by tweeting using the hashtags #FreeWaleed and #WaleedAbuAlkhair.
I know your time is limited, so thank you for taking this extra step.
