Buy one meal and get two free — one for a friend and one for someone in need — on World Sandwich Day.
Subway has declared Friday, Nov. 3 World Sandwich Day. People who buy any sandwich with a 21-ounce fountain drink will get a second sandwich of equal or lesser value free, plus one meal will be donated to Food Banks Canada.
Through the initiative, Subway ishoping to donate one million meals to hungry Canadians.
“We are passionate about the fight against hunger and are once again offering more than a free sandwich on World Sandwich Day; We are offering a chance to help feed Canadians experiencing hunger,” Cristina Wells, senior marketing director for Subway Canada, said in a statement. “Last year, we almost doubled our donation target and this year we’re looking to do it again, donating the (monetary) equivalent of one million meals to Canadians in need.”
Subway’s World Sandwich Day initiative will support hunger-relief charities in more than 70 countries. Across Canada, food bank usage increased 28 per cent from 2008 to 2016.
“As demand increases, partnerships with brands like Subway that value nutritious meals are essential,” Mimi Lowi-Young, acting executive director for Food Banks Canada, said in a statement. “Following last year’s donation, we were thrilled to hear that the program is being replicated around the globe. This is an incredibly busy time for us in Canada and many countries around the globe face similar challenges in the lead up to the holiday season.”
World Sandwich Day celebrations will also feature artists displaying murals in Toronto and Montreal, and Subway team members sorting items at local food banks.
