library archiving/ The Bachelor of Arts at MacEwan

Feb. 4, 2016 Library archiving: I was talking to my friend Jessica last month and she told me about getting a job as library archiving.

I did talk to a young man in his 20s at the Stanley A. Milner library in Oct. 2015.  It was in information interview about how he got his job at the information desk.  He told me there were like 75 applicants for 1 position.  He has an English degree.

Jessica did tell me that I should apply to a small town library because there's less competition.  Yeah, Edmonton is a big city with lots of competition.

I'm going through job ads and researching about these positions:

The College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CARNA) is hiring:

"Records Manager: In this newly expanded position, the Manager, Records will oversee and lead a team to maintain the collection, classification, retrieval, retention and destruction schedules of electronic and paper records, images, documents and information."

You Possess
  • Baccalaureate degree in Archives and Records Management or Library and Information Studies, preferred
  • Certified Records Management designation an asset
  • Project management experience an asset
  • Minimum of five (5) years records management experience
  • Previous leadership roles supporting staff
  • Working knowledge of paper and electronic image-based records management systems
  • Familiarity with standards and legislation relevant to records management (including electronic transactions), data protection and access to information and privacy
  • Extensive SharePoint experience and practical expertise
  • Satisfactory criminal record check

Jun. 6, 2016 Communitech: I was reading the business section of the newspaper and see this ad, and I looked it  up.

"Communitech helps tech companies start, grow and succeed."

This website isn't really for me, but the website was good.

The Bachelor of Arts at MacEwan: I was going through my papers and I found this brochure.  If I remember correctly, I got this in 2005.

Anthropology: It listed the careers and industry you can go to:

Elementary educators
College instructors
Forensic anthropologist
Archeologist
Museum curator
First Nations advisor
Medical anthropologist
International development
Local government
Environmental consultant

My opinion: The only job that interested me was museum curator and you need a masters or Phd.

Jun. 8, 2016 Psychology:

"....discovering the basic principles that underlie mental processes and behaviour."

"...become critical thinkers and develop an ability to gather and synthesize information from a variety of sources."

Work at:

hospitals
rehab centres (ex. Worker's Compensation Board)
research organizations (Statistics Canada)
Colleges
law enforcement
personnel administration

Specialization in: clinical and counseling, developmental, educational, experimental, and social.

My opinion: I am really interested in psychology.  I have taken a course in high school and college.  I did want to be a psychologist when I was 11-14 yrs old.  If I didn't make it as an actor, my back up plan was to be a psychologist.

However, I wanted to go to Victoria Performing Arts school for high school, but my parents wouldn't let me.  I then went to TV writing.

Political Science:

"is the study of governments, public policies and political behavior.  It uses both humanistic and scientific perspectives and skills to examine all countries and regions of the world."

Work at:

Foreign service
The UN system
College teacher
Non- government organizations dealing with international development
Business
Journalism
Public administration
Law
Government
Public affairs
Political staff
Community service
International relations
Comparative politics
Canadian government
Political theory
Local government
Public administration

My opinion: I was really interested in it.  I was never interested in politics and the government.  I don't read much about politics in the newspaper.

As usual my life is influence the most by TV.  This season 4 of Arrow, the character Oliver runs for mayor, The Family has a story about a politician who is running for governor.

Jun. 9, 2016 Economics:

"...economics of money, trade, of production and consumption, of distribution and development."

Work at:

Academia
Government
Financial institutions and brokerage firms
Private and public businesses
International organizations
Research organizations
Consulting firms
Political parties, hospitals, unions, volunteer organizations

My opinion: It doesn't really interest me.  It is practical.

English:

"You will learn how to generate and organize ideas and how to interpret complex pieces of writing.

"English majors make good managers."

Work at:

Education
Government
Technical writing
Journalism and creative writing
Public relations and corporate communications
Research organizations
Consulting firms
Political parties, hospitals, unions, volunteer organizations

My opinion: I was in the Arts and Cultural Management program and took 3 classes.  I met this woman named Kristy.  She had an English degree and she thought it wasn't really useful.

However, earlier I mentioned the librarian at the top of the page who says he had an English degree.  The job seems to be a good fit for him.

History: "History is not simply a chronicle of people, events, and dates.  Instead of asking 'what happened?', find out how it happened and how people were affected."

"The study of history gives you an understanding of the past and the present, with the varieties and complexities of past societies and their changes across time.  You will develop and understanding of why things are they way they are, and how our past is an influential contributor."

Work at:

Archives
Museums
Civil service
Foreign service
Research and analysis
Legal studies preparation
Publishing
Historic preservation
Journalism
Education
Library studies prepation
Litigation research
Public historian

My opinion: This major still seems impractical.  It's like journalism and education, and law are more practical to go into.

Philosophy: "...abstract and yet practical and concrete disciplines."

"What can I know?
What may I hope?
What ought I do?"

Work at:

College instructor
Researcher
Technical writer
Consultant to individuals, business, and organizations
Law
Medicine

My opinion: This seems to be a really impractical degree.  I may not have all the information, but I have some.  Unless someone wants to come along and show me how it's a practical degree.

Sociology:

Sociologist Max Weber: "A science concerning itself with the interpretive understanding of social action and thereby with a casual explanation of its course and consequences."

Work at:

Law enforcement
Criminal justice
Corrections
Government
Community services
Human resources
Business
Media
International relations
Public health
Consumer safety
Industrial specialist
Human rights

My opinion: It seems mildly practical if you go into law enforcement with this degree.

The minors: It said how an Arts degree with a minor in business studies will make you marketable, and a well-rounded education.

Jun. 10, 2016 Metro classes: I researched these classes that adults can study at.  I wrote about it back in 2014:

I still have that brochure.  I had it because there were these inspirational quotes on them, just like the MacEwan brochure did.  I had to type them up for my inspirational quotes.

Jun. 14, 2016: I thought: "What if I teach a class?  Most of these classes are 2 or 3 hrs for 1 day.  Or 8 hrs for one day.

But then: "What am I an expert in?  What do I have a lot of knowledge on?"

Writing, screenwriting.  But I don't know if I can teach a class in it.

Jun. 23, 2016: I typed up all the quotes now.  I still haven't thought of anything to teach.  At least I have this blog to put up all the information from those job articles.
