Take action: Canadian mine profits from human rights abuse

Amnesty Investigation Reveals Corporate Crime and Abuses at Myanmar Copper Mine

Canadian company Ivanhoe Mines built its business on a foundation of human rights abuse.

Dear Tracy,

New research published today reveals that Canadian company Ivanhoe Mines (now called Turquoise Hill) profited from serious human rights abuses and illegal activity.

Call on Canada’s new Minister of Foreign Affairs to investigate these serious violations.

The report Open for Business: Corporate Crime and Abuses at Myanmar Copper Mine presents extensive new evidence uncovered through Amnesty International’s research, including serious allegations of wrongdoing and complicity in human rights abuses by Ivanhoe Mines.

 * thousands forcibly evicted
 * no investigation into the effects of pollution and severe health risks
 * lying in public about copper sales in Myanmar, and possible breach of economic sanctions
 * divestment in a highly secretive process

The company left behind a toxic legacy of contaminated land and profited from the forced eviction of thousands more villagers, who did not receive any consultation, compensation or resettlement.

Amnesty International is calling on the Canadian government to ensure these serious concerns are fully investigated.

These new revelations once again demonstrate the need for meaningful Canadian law and policy reforms to better ensure that Canadian companies uphold their human rights responsibilities, no matter where they explore, dig or drill.

Please take action

Sincerely,
