Dear Tracy,

Last month, a 20-year old Indian woman was gang raped by 13 men – on the orders of an all-male village council – as punishment for falling in love with a Muslim man.

In India, councils like this -- called khap panchayats – routinely issue extra-legal decrees ordering inhuman and sexually violent punishments against women, including 'honor' killings.

Although khap panchayats are common, the orders that they issue violate Indian laws.

Amnesty International is pressuring police to investigate the gang rape and to bring those responsible to justice. We are also lobbying the Indian government to crack down on this practice.

Our work depends on the support of people like you. Donate and help make sure that women and girls don't stand alone.

We are determined to stop violence against women and to hold their perpetrators accountable.

If you want to help us ensure that women have the right to live free from violence and exploitation, please donate to support Amnesty's efforts.

Sincerely,

Cristina M. Finch
