Dear Tracy,
Haiti abolished slavery nearly sixty years before the United States. Yet many Haitian children - most of them girls - are still being sent to work as domestic servants in conditions like slavery. They work without pay. They sleep on the floor. They dress in rags. They are often beaten. Many are sexually exploited. I sat side-by-side yesterday with Guerda Constant, a Haitian woman who protects these girls and helps communities end child slavery - a practice called restavek. We testified together in front of the US Congress to mobilize support for the International Violence Against Women Act (IVAWA), which was just today reintroduced. This legislation will provide urgent support to help stop violence and exploitation of women and girls - like those Guerda sees every day. If you agree that living free from violence and exploitation is a human right worth standing up for, please donate to support Amnesty's efforts. All Members of Congress in the United States should take action to end the epidemic of violence and exploitation against women by supporting IVAWA. But will they? This critical question is why Amnesty International is launching a major mobilization effort to urge Congress to support and pass IVAWA. IVAWA is more than an acronym for a piece of legislation. It's a critically important bill that will provide real solutions to help the women and girls Guerda sees every day. Women like Marie*, who was raped along with her daughter after gang members killed her husband. Marie is working hard to rebuild her life and keep her children out of the child slavery system. IVAWA can help. Help us protect more girls and stop the epidemic of violence and exploitation. Donate today. Sincerely, Cristina Finch Managing Director, Women's Human Rights Program Amnesty International USA *Name has been changed to protect her identity |
