With your help, we were able to send more than 6,000 messages to Prime Minister Stephen Harper, in the midst of extraordinary cross-country mobilization for Indigenous rights.
Thank you!

In recent weeks we have seen an unprecedented outpouring of public support for the rights of Indigenous peoples, catalyzed by the grassroots Idle No More movement.

As the rights of Indigenous people draw more attention in the media, we want to be sure that Amnesty International supporters like you understand why these issues have become so pressing, and recognize the significance of these human rights issues in a global perspective. I invite you to read our responses to some of frequently asked questions we've been answering as part of our daily dialogue with our members, the public and the media.

I also want to encourage you to follow up on your online action by writing a personal letter.

First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples must be full and effective participants in all decisions affecting their lives, cultures, economies, health and well-being.
With approximately 600 new major resource development projects currently underway or in development across Canada, there are potentially profound impacts on the lands and waters vital to Indigenous peoples. Amnesty International is urging that all decisions about resource development  be based on respect for the rights of Indigenous peoples as set out by Canadian law, the Treaties and international human rights standards. This includes the right of Indigenous peoples to free, prior and informed consent.

By upholding these rights at home, Canada has the potential to create positive models of reconciliation and respect for human rights that are urgently needed around the world.

A personal letter is still one of the best ways to have your voice heard on government decisions. Please take a few minutes to write a short letter to the Prime Minister.
In your own words, let the Prime Minister know that respect for the human rights of Indigenous peoples is important to you and that you want your government to uphold these rights in all its actions. The background section of this action highlights a number of additional points that you might want to make, based on Amnesty International’s ongoing work related to Indigenous rights.
Thank you again for showing your support for Indigenous rights in Canada!
